Shutting off after warm up
Hello I am new to this forum, and I have a problem. My name is Jen and I have a 2000 GZ250 , she has 4,400 miles ONLY (she was a MSF course bike) I have owned it for 2 seasons now with no problems,until now.....
Here is my problem. I took it to get inspected yesterday all was fine , got a sticker and left the garage. Got about a mile or two away and the bike just cuts out! like someone hit the switch. I pulled into a driveway to call my husband but no one was home so I just waited and kept trying to get her started. Finally she did and off I went, for about another 2 miles when again she cuts out. So I wait again and viola she starts, so I start again only to get another 2 miles or so. after a few more times of shutting off and waiting I finally make it back to my house which is less then ten miles from the garage that I use for inspection. I was with the older gentleman the whole time he was inspecting my bike so nothing strange could have happened at the garage. So I come in to the house,and start reading other posts and seeing if anything sounded the same or about the same. Which was very helpful I will add,to know some problem areas to look at. Between my husband and I we checked all hoses to make sure they were tight and in good shape. The night before we changed the oil and added a bit too much (about .25 too much) so we drained some back out.after reading info on here. We got some sea foam and put that in and are running it through( what a smell) We took the air cleaner out and there was some oil in there so I cleaned it out and replaced air filter. We pulled the spark plug and it looked very good,normal good very slight light grey residue on the ground strap of the plug We drained the old gas out and put in 2 gallons of fresh 93 octane in there with a bit more of the sea foam. we drained the bowl a few times and the gas that came out ran clear no junk came out. The bike runs fine untill it warms up then it wont continue to run, its just quits ,like the cut off switch was turned off. Is this an ignition issues or????? We have checked all the wires and no cracks , broken or loose wires/connections. We also checked the voltage and it goes between 13.3 to 14.2 when running.You can wildly twist the throttle,to try to keep it running with the only result being a flodded engine.If you are riding along and it starts to cary on,and you try to give it a big twist on the throttle nothing changes. It is exactly if you are turning the switch off and on while riding in any gear.Also when in neutral sitting at idle it will just shut down,same way as if the switch was shut off.Most of the time unless you flood the engine it will start right back up. This only goes on after the bike is warmed up. Pleas help, thanks in advance for your replys Login or Register to Remove Ads |

After all that work, you probably checked, but is your fuel petcock set to PRI for some reason?
If not, I'm going to have to defer to more experienced posters.

You're right. After reading the manual, PRIme is only "hazardous" if left on when the engine is off because it allows continues flow to the carb which can overflow the float bowl and spill out onto the bike or ground.
I thought it would just flood the engine out in the prime position.

How about this: the float bowl is emptying out causing the 2 mile run. You stop, it fills up, then starts and runs off whats in there. Could be something heat related that is causing the flow needle/floats to get stuck. If it were me i'd tear the carb off and check into it.
I just don't see it being electrical ... could be wrong though. Wouldnt be the first time. |

Didnt get a chance to try the othe things mentioned as I was super busy, yesterday. I am going to try them this afternoon. Is it a hard job to tear the carb off and apart?

That should be your last resort though. Check the easy stuff first, like fuel flow INTO the carb.

I have ani idea that would, at the very least, rule out a couple of things.
You'll need a couple of feet of clear tubing that won't melt if it comes into contact with gasoline. And about 10 minutes. 1.Disconnect the float bowl drain tube from the bottom of the carb and connect the clear tubing. 2."Crack" open the float bowl drain screw 3. Set your petcock in the "PRI" position. (or RUN if you want to vary the test. see below) As the fuel fills the float bowl, it will also drain into the clear tubing. With the tubing smoothly bent around so that the open end is above the float bowl, you should see the gas stop at the top of the bowl. Check this link for a how-to. http://www.bbburma.net/FloatHeight.htm The GS500 is very similar to ours, it just has larger jets, a slightly larger body, and there are two of them. Also, you can vary this by cranking the bike and leave it running to see what happens to the gas in the float chamber. If the gas, that should be able to see because of the clear tubing, runs, then you will know what the problem is. I'd bet it corrsponds with the bike shutting off. |
