When you replaced the pads, did you remove the anti squeal shims from the old pads, and fit them to the new ones? Part NÂș 15 on the drawing.

you just might be a genius! when i took them off there was only one. the previous owner must have lost the other.
so is it pretty likely that this is the problem?
even if the squeal started a couple days after i changed them

Probably took a coupla days for the pads to bed in to the shape of the discs. I wouldn't think that the shims would be very expensive, so it might be worth getting a pair and fitting them, just to eliminate one possibility. Another thing..Did you lubricate the guide pins, to allow the pads to move freely?
