A small tip I'll pass on.
Sometimes I have difficulty mounting my bike without my right foot hitting the pillion seat. I even tried mounting from the right side, it didn't help. Now I use the left footpeg as a step, PROBLEM SOLVED! It works with the forward footpeg on my Shadow, should work even better on bikes with footpegs set further back.
ADDED: You might need to straighten the bar first, so the grip doesn't hit you where you don't want to be hit.

That is the only graceful way I can get on the Vstrom with a rider back rest and large hard bags.

Re: A small tip I'll pass on.
When I sat on some bikes at the dealer I always chose those with low saddle heighth for that reason; now saddle heighth will be less of a factor.

Just make sure the side stand is properly set so you don't tip the bike over on top of you. And don't pull on the right handlebar to get you on.
