The Hyperlight LED brake lights are an add-on, not a replacement for the OEM brakelight. I would like to hear an insurance company say the the OEM brakelight wasn't visible because the Hyperlights were too bright.

I just sent off an E-mail to Hyper folks concerning DOT compliance etc. Hoping for a response in due time.

That was quick. They say the lights are not DOT approved but are auxilary lighting not meant to replace the OEM equipment. Works for me.

The problems you state regarding incadescent bulbs are valid but they have worked well for decades. The same arguments for LED's were made for traffic signals but I've seen the state take a financial beating on replacing the suppossedly long lasting lights because several individual LED's have failed. The whole thing just seems like a "wallet-vac" to me.

Regarding DOT, I'll state again, it's about an insurance denial. I wouldn't be that worried about a ticket.

Typewriters worked fine for decades so who needs computers? Land line phones worked fine for decades so who needs cell phones?

If they have 100 LEDs in a traffic light and they're replacing them because several individual LEDs have failed then they're soaking the tax payer. The only problem with LED traffic lights is in cold wet weather where there is no heat from the bulb to melt the ice/snow.

Insurance would only be denied if it were a contributing factor to the accident. They can't just deny you because you have a non DOT light.

Correct. The LED is only an auxilary brakelight. The key word is "auxilary".
Some bikes do come with OEM LED tail lights and brake lights. Lynda's M-50 is one of them. My bike has an "auxilary" LED tail/brake light in the form of a round trailer light. It is mounted where the license plate light used to be and lights up the plate as well. I didn't know about Hyper Lights at the time.

To take this conversation back in a different direction, a company called Clear Alternatives makes and aftermarket LED brake light kit for the GZ.

They used to be available through Dennis Kirk or straight form the manufacturer:
