When I got my bike, I had to jump it off to start it ( the battery was shot). So here is what I did.
On the battery cover on the right side, I drilled two 1/4 inch holes 4 inches apart just after the place where the cover angles at the front. I put a bolt in each one, double nutted, with the bolt heads on the inside of the cover. Then I made two cables out of 12 guage red and black wire about 10 inches long, put terminals on each end and attched them to the bolts. The other ends went to the battery terminals, the red wire to positive and the black to negitive. When I finished them, I attached two large wire nuts to the protruding bolt shafts on the outside of the cover, a red nut on pos. and a black one on neg. Now if I ever need to boost the bike from a car for some reason, I don't have to remove anything and it takes almost no time at all. Just unscrew the wire nuts, clamp on the cables and bust it off. I did use it before I changed the battery out later on, and it works like a charm. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Much easier and safer to attach the flat SAE plug that comes with all the little battery chargers/maintainers/tenders and let it hang out somewhere protected beneath the bike or the seat, You can also use that as an accessory plug for a light load like a GPS or phone charger.

Plus 1 for the DIYer attitude.
But to be safe, just swing over to your local flea market, buy some electrical connectors and wire for $.50 and make a hidden hook up. Finish it off with rubber plugs so they can't short out on the frame or, like Alan said, some jerk doesn't just jumper them and fry your whole system. It's a safety hazard for kids too. "Little Johnny, come back in here with that fork!" "It's OK Mom! I'll pretend it's my key for uncle Joel's motorcyzzzzzk...... BOOM!" |

Just let the wire and plug hang down underneath in a protected site, ziplock it to the frame if you want. It's a no brainer, I have this on my other 3 bikes and it takes only a few minutes to hook up and it's always right there for use. That's much better and safer than having 2 bare battery terminal posts exposed just waiting to be shorted out by some bystander, (WTF is this?) especially without an inline fuse on the + side.

Might be a lot safer and still handy using the mentioned flat plug and just rolling up some longer wires for a booster cable. Keep it all under the seat, it only takes a few seconds to remove the seat. 6 feet of coiled 12 guage wire with clips on one end and a flat plug on the other should easily fit.

Well, the large wire nuts over the bolts do cover the terminals. I didn't think about someone tampering with them. I will put an inline fuse on though.
