Wilder's Tower
Today I took a short ride from my house down to the Chickamauga Battlefield. The main reason I went was to secure a picture of a war memorial for the tag-o-rama game, but I specifically wanted this war memorial because it has been in my memory since early childhood and it's one of my favorite places to go in the park. Wilder Tower looks like a castle turret, and as a kid I thought that it was some kind of stronghold from which soldiers fought during the civil war, but it's actually a war memorial for the men who fought and died on that hill during the battle of Chickamauga in the US Civil War. Around 1899 some of the soldiers who had fought there raised the money and built this 85 foot tall tower as a tribute and named it after their commanding officer. Okay, I'll shut up now and let you see the photos.
One of the best things about Wilder's tower is that you get to climb it and go all the way to the top and look out at a magnificent view. It's a pretty arduous climb but I always love it once I get to the top, so here are several shots from starting up to the top and then the view. It was a great day for a ride, upper 80's, sunshine and the Battlefield Park is always beautiful to ride through. Hope you enjoyed the shots. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Re: Wilder's Tower
Thank you BB. The tower is a beautiful tribute to the soldiers of both sides. They are not forgotten.

Re: Wilder's Tower
Thanks WW, I wish the camera shots from the top did it justice, but they aren't even close. For about 300 degrees all you can see is green treetops and the mountains in the distance the other 60 degrees you can only see the trees but it feels like you are on top of the world when you are up there.

Re: Wilder's Tower
its always hard to capture the real beauty, vastness and serenity in cameras. anyway you gave us a good tour of the place. i like nature and such places. sitting under the shade of a tree and picknicking with family.
