Went down in traffic today....

Despite normally starting work at 4pm, and avoiding peak hour traffic :2tup: today saw me making the commute to work for training at 9am. So after and early night last night and a coffee to kick the day off, gave Mrs Baseball a kiss and got out on the bike. Today in Melbourne was not a great day to ride, plenty of rain, pretty cold and so on. So get most of the way to work, no lane splitting for a change, ride well within ones limits......get over a small rise with train tracks, and a red car pulls out of a side street, fishtails (looses their rear) in the wet, so i respond with brakes. Too much it turns out, because the next thing I know is that I'm on the deck. Get the bike back up, roll it over to the gutter, kick stand down and get the helmet off to survey the damage. My chaps are all kinds of ruined, large hole ripped in the top of the right leg. Right arm of my armor jacket has a nice pair of twenty cent piece holes in it. Everything else is fine, including the GZ. She got a little scrape on the front guard, but thats all. So I now sit here, not feeling the greatest due to some pain in my shoulder and a large bruise on my leg.......but when i realize that it could be much worse alls good.

Thats my exciting day.

Re: Went down in traffic today....

my friend had a major wreck on his gz, broke his leg in many places and had to get pins in, when i stoped by to visit i first went out to the garage and inspected his bike, one of the little side covers was craked and some scratched up fenders was the only damage visible those little bikes are tough. he had dropped it a few other times, parked on a hill and after he got off the bike it rooled and wend down, no damage and i remember one other time he did forgot to put the kick stand down or something and dropped it, no dammage

glad your ok besides some ruined cloths, don't be to upset about the ruined cloths, that's what you wear them for, so they get beat and full of holes instead of you.

Re: Went down in traffic today....

A moderately costly learning incident - probably a net plus all things considered. No permanent body damage and I'd say you are hard wired from here on out to be careful with the brakes when it's wet. I only ride on wet roads when it's due to poor weather forecasting on my part. Between sand, gravel, leaves, paint, oil, tracks, metal plates, man(person?)holes, etc, there's just too many opportunities to hit the pavement. I feel stable on a wet freeway (being relatively free of debris and having grooved pavement) but side roads and especially country roads, just seem like one hazard after another sneaking up to kill you.

Keep yer joints moving over the next week or so - often the worst doesn't set in until a few days after. Glad you didn't bust anything up real bad.

Ouch, that is the wrong way to start the day. Glad you weren't more severly damaged body wise. Maybe just go visit the Doc as a precaution, you never know.

Re: Went down in traffic today....

Well after the demands of Ms Baseball, went to see the Doc this mornin. (I'll rant about the sorry state of the Aussie heathcare system elsewhere) But after a getting some x-rays, the doctor has informed me that besides the bruises and a bad strain to my rotor cuff, all seems to be where it should and there is no broken bones to deal with.

So now its off to the gear store tomorrow, which is thankfully less than 10 mins away in the steel cage, to get some of those kevlar lined jeans to replace the chaps. A painful way to learn the lesson about braking in the wet...but then when i consider that those chaps "could" have just been my skin, I'm glad that I learned the lesson that way.

So it'll be back on the bike tomorrow.. :chop:

Get armored riding pants, with armor in the knees and padding over the hips. Kevlar pants may resist abrasion better than jeans but offer no impact protection.

I have some Joe Rocket Atomic jeans with armor in the knees and hip padding. I will often wear them when tinkering on the bikes. Built in kneeling pads are great for old folks. Also the hip padding works well when you fall off a stool onto a concrete floor.
Don't know if the jeans are still available but they have a nice lining and useful pockets with zippers. The jeans also breath fairly well on a hot day compared to my other riding pants.
