Exhaust at engine very tarnished
I bought my bike in febuary and it had only 55 miles on it.
Now after 1000 miles or so the pipes are very tarnished. Any suggestion on products and techniques??/ Thanks, Opa Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Re: Exhaust at engine very tarnished
This is normal as my bike at about the same mileage began what is called blueing. Nothing you can really do. See link below:

Observe other bikes as you ride. You will notice that a LOT of them have it to some degree or another.

Re: Exhaust at engine very tarnished
I totally agree with everyone else comments, however; they set these bikes up very "lean" from the factory so they will meet EPA specs and that makes them run hot which is what causes the discoloration. I don't know if "richening" up the fuel mixture will stop the bike from getting hot enough to "blue" the pipes but it can't hurt to try as long as a skilled mechanic is doing the adjusting for you. But other than changing the color of your pipes, I don't remember ever hearing of a real problem associated with the way they come set from the factory.

The chrome on the Shadow, however, is clean and shiny.....right up to the heads. :poke2:  The rest of it is all dirty......but that's another story.

I agree with everyone else who said "badge of honor" etc....keep it like that and brag about them being blued. Remember that there are plenty of aftermarket pipes out there (not for the GZ, mind you) that blue intentionally. Look up titanium and multicolored burn-in mufflers.
