Does everyone float gears?
Clutchless shifting just seemed to come natural to me 20 or so years ago when
I started riding. I even showed my brother how to a few years later. I do it all the time everywhere I go and after tens of thousands of miles on numerous bikes over many years there doesn't seem to be any drawback to shifting like this. Does everyone do this? Just a twitch of the wrist and pull the next gear.... Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Yup, clutchless shifting on all my bikes when shifting to a higher gear. Down shifting never sounds good to me as the engine and chain just seems to take a bit of a jolt.
I did have one bike(Suzuki) that I could get a false neutral between each gear so I could easily match the RPM with the rest of the bike with nary a jolt. The 1978 GT750 Suzuki I had was a real hoot to shift clutchless. Wind her up to 9000 RPM and flip my wrist to full throttle....................second gear and a strip of rubber marked my presence on the road. Shoulda, coulda but didn't keep that bike. My loss, someone else' gain. |

Do it sometimes, when I want to show off fast shifting. Then, I realize I'm showing off, which is something I shouldn't be doing.
So, yes, but only every now and then. 2 to 3, and up.

Or you could refine your clutchless shifting to a smooth less aggressive procedure. Makes for a really smooth ride using less throttle and shifting when you no longer are accelerating in any chosen gear. Sort of like an auto tranny in a car under light acceleration.
