what a mess...help :/
OK here is the mess I have on my hands. 2006 GZ, everything worked perfect, 3300miles. my fil snapped the key off, and proceeded to wire in separate switches for the ignition switch according to the diagram on here. red to orange, o/y to bk/white, and brown to gray. Then he gave it back not running...grrr.
So here is the deal, bike turns over, all lights work, etc but will not fire, and does not have spark. I checked power at the ignition fuse and its fine. However I noticed that the bike will crank with the kickstand down, which it didn't in the past. Can someone point me in a direction? This is my only transportation and now its my problem to fix! I am sure the more experienced folks on this excellent forum will be along soon to advise.
But I would say that there is probably a kick stand interlock that was designed to prevent the bike from starting in gear with the kickstand down or riding away with the kick stand down. That could come into play with your current problem. By the way, welcome to the forum! |

Yes...The bike is meant to start with the kick stand down. If you put it into gear with it down, the engine cuts out. This is a safety device, so you can't ride off with the kickstand down.

Welcome to the forum Chad. Have you talked to any Locksmith about removing the broken key? This happened to a friend of mine a few years back. Locksmith was able to get broken key out and make a new key for him. Price was not high, but might depend on Locksmith. Never hurts to check. Double check the wiring that was done. Alantf is excellent with wiring, as are a few others on here. Hopefully with every one on here, you will be back enjoying your GZ shortly.

I'm not sure but I remember reading here a while back that the GZ has some special anti-theft gadget in the lock such that the ignition doesn't work when it's 'hotwired'. Maybe it will work since the key is still in...
