I dunno if you solved this problem by now or not.

Anyway, when I first bought my wife's 99, it wouldnt start either. no spark. Ended up being the kickstand switch even tho I checked it with a meter and was passing current thru. after trying a cdi and no help I brokedown and bought a new kickstand switch. That fixed it for me but not until I bolted it to the frame. its got to be grounded to the frame thru the switch body. Would not work just being plugged in holding it in my hand. ran me in circles a bit before figuring it out.
May not be your problem but it fixed it for me.
