I would toss the old sprocket. To my eyes the sprocket looks worn to the point that the chain rollers will not fit properly between the sprocket teeth. The new sprocket will be cheaper than a prematurely worn out chain.
I always changed chain and both sprockets as a set just to be sure of reliability and smooth running.
Call me silly but I always changed wheel bearings when installing new tires too.
Oddly enough the tires and chain etc always lasted 25,000 kms for me so it was a hit in the wallet when things were due. Other than that the Vstrom 650 needed nothing else but regular maintenance, gas and exercise.
