The speedo drive on the front hub may be the culprit. It has to be put in the one and only proper way or it will be damaged upon reassembly. I am going on the assumption that it is the same style of drive on my Vstrom. Did you get the inner speedo cable to seat properly?
Here's how to check your speedo, well at least what I would do. Detach the top end of the speedo cable from the speedo. Spin the front wheel or push the bike to see if the top end of the inner cable is turning. If the inner turns then the drive must be good. If not you may have to remove the front wheel and speedo drive for inspection.
