One way to get the rubber out is to get a piece of wire coat hanger, bend the end into a hook, and fish the rubber out. Don't forget, when you take the other one off - Just loosen it, not completely unscrew it, then pull it out in one piece.
BTW, it says that the diameter of the E-bay bar ends is 28mm. The original bar ends are 32mm diameter. Just sayin'.
