Congratulations on the Vulcan 500 purchase. I changed from the GZ to the Vulcan 500 about a year and a half ago. I also loved the GZ but needed a highway capable bike for longer commutes to school. I've put over 21,000 miles on the Vulcan so far and it has surpassed my expectations. I think you will be very pleased with your decision, and yes, it can definitely keep up with and pass that Harley. As for the Vulcan 900 that Emory mentioned, it's one beautiful bike, but I'll take the performance of my 500 over the 900's any day.
