none of that is earth shattering.
The center of the speedometer cable should stick OUT both ends......if you have the outer sheath loose......
like in the first picture you posted. Did you see the inside core while the top end was loose ??
If not, your cable is probably broken and you likely need a new one.
If you DID see the inside cable when it was loose, chances are good that you just didn't get it screwed on far enough
when you put it back together.
There is a gear on the front wheel assembly that turns the core inside the cable. The other end of that core turns
a mechanism inside the speedometer to make the reading.
