Anyone ever use canvas saddle bags? I'm looking at these..

Three questions:
1- Are my text books gonna get soaked in the rain? I mean they say water resistant not water proof..
2- Is 13 inches to much for a GZ with no back seat? I measured but I'm iffy.
3- How the heck did Sarris mount his without the back seat? I read some post a million times and studied those pictures but i just didn't get it. I was thinking about fabricating like two pieces of long metal and running them from the two bolts where the back seat attaches to the middle bolt on the back of the fender and running the saddle bags through that to keep them in place.
