Oil change and gearoil
Hello.
I just bought my first bike, a 2002 GZ250. I am going to change the engine oil and the gear oil. But is it the same? What type for engine? What type for gearbox? -And yes I am totally new in this area :lmao:  Can I use normal 10/40 W oil for cars, or is it something else for motorbikes? Thank You, and really great with a forum for GZ250 specific  regards Torben |
Welcome.DO NOT use car oil in your bike or any oil that has "energy Conserving" wrote on it.You can damage the clutch. The engine & transmission use the same oil.A lot of us use Rotella-T 15-14.Cheap & readily available. When you drain the oil make sure you remove the front drain plug.Their is another one towards the rear that looks identical. ;) :)

There is an instructional guide on changing your oil. Follow it and read the discussion. You'll learn pretty much everything you need to.
Most motorcycles have a system like ours, where the clutch and gear and engine internals are all bathed in the same lubricant. For this reason, we can't use the "ENERGY CONSERVING" or "RESOURCE CONVERVING" because some of the friction inhibiting polymers that help automotive engine achieve higher fuel economy ratings will wreack havoc on our clutch's ability to grab and bite. |
Ok, thank You both for Your reply´s. Rotella oil is not available in Denmark, but I found another motorcycle oil: Putoline Technomoto sport 4 10W-40. I have read in this forum about changing the oil, and have now got a fairly good picture of this task.
I do see that the right type of oil is VERY important, as it lubricates 3 different and vital areas. Thanks again, I will probably be asking again, and definetely read a lot in this forum in the future. |
A torque wrench is also very handy, so you don't overtighten things.
|
Any diesel oil with a JASO certification will do. Rotella is very popular in North America.

Yes a torque wrench is good to have. I will look for one soon. I always wonder if I tighten too much or too little, when doing service on our 50 cc scooters :hmm:
By the way, how can I know if the valves needs adjustment, and how often. Thanks. Torben |
Did you mean Rotella-T SAE15w-40
