Oil Quantity
After searching the manual and this forum, the consensus is that my 2003 gz250 should take no more than 2 quarts of oil. HOWEVER, I just changed the oil on it. There was less than 1 quart of oil in the engine when I drained it. I replaced the oil in the engine with 2 quarts. I ran the bike for several minutes and waited a few minutes and checked the inspection window. It was dry. Barely a spray of oil was noticeable and certainly nowhere near the "L" line.
Should I add more oil? If so, how much is safe to add? Has anyone ever had a similar problem like this? Thanks for the help! |
Re: Oil Quantity
The GZ takes less than 1 and 1/2 quarts.
The sight glass would be over the full mark with 2 quarts. The side of the engine is stamped with the correct amount in mls. 1400 if I remember right. You are checking the oil with the bike upright, not on the sidestand,??? |

"Once the new filter is installed, bolt the cover back on and re-install the oil drain bolt. You then need to fill the bike with 1.5 quarts of your favorite oil. If you are not changing the filter, I believe you only need to use 1.4 quarts." |

I think what you did was overfill it to the point where the sight glass is below the level of the oil! Try draining a half quart or so, then see what happens. Remember to check the level with the bike straight up and down, NOT resting on the kickstand. What I do is to rst the kickstand on a short piece of 2x4. |
Re: Oil Quantity
Could it do any damage to the engine if it is overfilled?

Re: Oil Quantity
Think Metric. 1300 ml of oil without a filter change. 1400 ml with a filter change.
Just made a correction, now I feel better. |
Re: Oil Quantity
Thank guys. I put in 1900ml. So I only need to drain 500ml.

Remember, it comes out a lot faster than when filling it. First time I did that, I drained over half of the oi out before I realized how fast it was draining. |
Re: Oil Quantity
Probably easiest to drain it all out and refill as needed.
