need help with ignition wiring

can someone smarter than me please help! I recently purchased a 2002 GZ250 as a first streetbike for my son. We bought it very reasonably because it was a recovered stolen bike. the seat, headlight, ignition switch, turn signals had been taken. I have a whole garage of old junk (mostly early 70's honda twins, suzuki dr370, gn400's) and felt it would be simple to retrofit alot of parts that i have to make it complete. However, I cannot get it to fire. I read on a thread from Bad Bob about the floating ground on the trigger. Is there any way around a factory switch to make this fire? I read the ground wire (blk/wht) has 96 ohms impedance, so i went to radio shack and bought a 100 ohm resistor and ran the ground though it, but when i put power to the orng/ylw hot wire i still had no spark. i really don't want to put a fortune in this by buying one factory component after another to get it to fire. also, does anyone know if the old gn250 engine was identical? could i take the igntion system off of one of those, or does it still have the same type of set up. any help appreciated, thanks, Loren

The whole assembly is only $70.65 at www.ronayers.com .

Part number 37200-13FB0

I think that's more reasonable than the headache.

Hope this helps,
Jonathan

I never tried using a resistor in the circuit. After I figured out it was normal I gave up attempting to hot wire the GZ. I would love to know how it can be done but am unwilling to give up my bike for long enough to find out.

If you need to know factory parts numbers, go to the main page and then select the FICHE option from the folder tabs on the center screen. It should be pretty straight forward from there.

Good luck,
Jonathan

i went ahead and ordered the ignition switch along with a front seat from ron ayer. their prices seem pretty fair. when i receive/install it i'll let you know how it went, sure hope it cures it. thanks to the fellow for the factory service manual.

well i received the factory ignition switch the other day and installed it. i don't know what kind of magic it's working inside, but it fired up so I'm thankful. thanks again. i will use ron ayer again in the future. relatively fast shipping and good prices
