Hi Gary~

You'll be using 1st gear to start moving after dropping down to it from neutral.
1st and 2nd are very low speeds so you'll find yourself in 3rd pretty quickly
with 4th and 5th the most useful above 30-35mph or so. It's a whole lot
easier to find neutral by going to it dropping down from 2nd than it is
to try and find it going up from 1st. If in 1st, go to 2nd then back
down to neutral. Shifting is more by feel & noise than anything.

Maybe I should have written that better.

What I was trying to say was NOT that I find neutral better
if I am on 5th gear or so dropping down to 4th-3rd-2nd and
then I find neutral. What I meant was I will be in 5th gear
and will go down to 4th-3rd-2nd and 1st. Then from 1st I
will try to find neutral but I seem to go past it quite easily
finding myself up in 2nd whereas from there I find neutral.

Once I get more time on my GZ250 as blaine & alantf
perhaps I will find neutral easier straight from 1st gear.
As things stand I seem to keep shooting past it for now
and I have had better luck as I find it going down from 2nd.

:)

Sounds about normal in my experience. You will find the tranny easier to shift and pick 1st or neutral as time goes by. Fresh oil will make a difference too if you haven't had a recent oil change. More seat time will help and you just need to develop a feel for the bike in general.
