Dead dash
 

Hello ladies and gents, I have a dash that just died on me. After just a quick look I found this:

I took the dash cover off, and screwed it back in as best as I could to something like this:

I still get nothing though. Is there a certain way to re-insert the cable? Maybe I need a new one?

I have to ask, why 3 posts for the same thing?
BTW I have no idea as how to fix your problem

(1) I think you'll find it's called a SPEEDOMETER. A dash is something that you'll find in a CAR! :whistle:

(2) There's only one way to find out. Disconnect the bottom end from the drive unit in the wheel. As you turn one end of the cable, if the other end turns, it's o.k. It could just be that when the top end came adrift, the bottom end (square drive) has come out of the drive thingy. If the cable's o.k., make sure both ends are seated properly. Once you get it working properly, gently nip up the screwed ends with a pair of grips to stop them coming loose again. I suspect that the cable is not broken, because the same thing happened to me, due to them not nipping the top end up, from the factory. :2tup:

OK, let's all beat up on the newbie.........NOT. :roll:

He posted the same thing 3 times and his images were WAY too big, at least in the first post.....but
none of that is earth shattering.

The center of the speedometer cable should stick OUT both ends......if you have the outer sheath loose......
like in the first picture you posted. Did you see the inside core while the top end was loose ??
If not, your cable is probably broken and you likely need a new one.

If you DID see the inside cable when it was loose, chances are good that you just didn't get it screwed on far enough
when you put it back together.

There is a gear on the front wheel assembly that turns the core inside the cable. The other end of that core turns
a mechanism inside the speedometer to make the reading.

Let us know how it turns out.

I see the inside core in the first picture. It looks though like the thingy is bent. Unless souvlaki can straighten it out and the core turns freely inside the cable, it's a new cable...

If the speedo cable just came loose and it still works then I would suggest pulling the inner speedo core out and lubing it while you are at it.

Same thing happened on mine a month or so back, and on my Kawasaki Concours a year or so ago. It's a common occurrence with his type of speedometer connection. I agree with most of what's been said so far, except the part about "nipping" the screwed ends. I would suggest, instead, using blue Loctite, as this will also hold the unit in place without damaging anything, and you can still get it off when you need to.

Also, some motorcycles do indeed have dashboards - namely the bigger ones with lots of instrumentation. My Concours had, not only a large instrument display surface, but also a horizontal surface behind the windshield and instruments that could only logically be called a dashboard.

Sorry about that. I tried to edit the pictures to a smaller version and it must have resubmitted it.

Anyways, I rode the bike down the street while holding the metal tip with my fingers in one hand and it DOES NOT turn or rotate at all. Can I assume its broken somewhere between the wheel and end on the other side? The wheel end seems to be pretty firm on there. I dont even know how I'm going to get that off! haha
