What non-riders really think about loud pipes...

Editorial today on bikes and noise.

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la- ... 3457.story

For the record, I'm not a big fan of loud pipes in residential neighborhoods, small town main streets etc. I'm not really a fan of loud anything (boom cars, gas powered leaf blowers, the guy in the gym that has to grunt and slam the weights around so everyone notices he's benching 400) except maybe outdoor rock music, and, even then, I usually go with ear plugs. I understand the appeal, but to me, loud stuff is an infringement on other people's rights to peace and quiet. I know some noise is necessary and my Strat isn't exactly whisper quiet - but I'm careful to start it in the street and leave immediately, quietly at low speed, low revs and stock pipes.

If you are riding out in the desert or farm towns and so on where there aren't 12 million people living on top of one another, I say have at it, make all the noise you want, you probably aren't bothering anyone anyway.

My cows have gotten used to the bike, but the neighbor's horses, now that's another story.

An aide to my city councilwoman, Suja Lowenthal, told me that his boss has tried to combat the problem. He says she pushed the police to set up checkpoints to catch the noisiest offenders. Great, I told him, so why haven't I ever seen one in my neighborhood? Probably, he said, because the police have their hands full with serious crime.

Exactly ... they have admitted, for once, they have better things to do.

Old cars / hot rods / street-strip cars are for the most part loud .... yet no one complains about them going down the road. What do you say? "oooOOoooOOoo look at that '68 mustang!!"

Yep, if they are going to do the bikes they should do the autos as well.

Some people just have to have something to do, to justify themselves in life, to get a "cause".

Been there done that with loud cages. Now I welcome the sounds of silence. I don't want to feel the sound waves anymore.

Mind you, there was a time in a tunnel with open headers on a small block chevy.
