Anybody notice??????
Anybody notice I´ve not been on the site for a while? April 20th. Raining. Came back into the house with wet shoes. Slipped. Went down. Most excrutiating pain of my life. Turned out I´d fractured my femur (thigh bone) Had to have an operation to pin it, and spent a week and a half in hospital. I´m home now, but confined to a wheelchair for another week, until I go back to the hospital, so they can decide if I can put any weight on the leg. Being having physio, but all of a sudden, my leg, from ankle to thigh, has swollen with liquid, so I´m having to sit with my leg raised. Totally pissed off.>:(

Welcome back :D
|
That's sucks.Feel better soon. ;) :)
|
Sorry to hear. Hope you recover quickly!
|
Ouch. Please get better quick.
I'm with you but only part of the way, a week ago I apparently hurt my right knee, it swelled up and made the tissue around it cramp and swell to, so this is my 6th day in bed. Now, the swelling has gone down a bit, and as of today most of the cramping is gone too. When you have your leg raised make sure it's entirely supported because I noticed that sections without support started to swell and cramp up. Everyone is different though. Hang in there Alan, soon this will just be a memory. |
Hope you get to feeling better soon.
|
Get well soon Alan. These tiled floors are lethal when wet, had a few close calls myself, things (including us) don't bounce like they do on carpets or wood!
|
Get well fast Alan.
:) |
I didn't notice you were gone at all... ;)
Heal up, old man. And get back in here. |
Sorry to hear it. Ouch! Take care! Hope you heal soon.
|
Hang in there Alan. Old bones take longer to knit. Sending our best wishes for a complete recovery.
|
Ah, there's the info. Follow doctor's orders is all I can suggest. Wishing you a complete recovery that allows you to ride soon!
|
Sorry to hear about your fall Alan, hopefully by the time you read this you'll be feeling much better and you'll be back on 2 wheels.
|
No such luck  It's two months since the accident, and I'm walking with a stick, but still got a bad limp, and I'm afraid I couldn't risk supporting the bike with that leg (with the other on the brake) However, I'm driving the car again, so at least I'm mobile. Looking on the internet, it says that full recovery is 4 to 6 months. :)

What kind of rehab to they have you doing for the muscles? Do you have daily exercises?
I don't want to push you, but I have some experience with this stuff. |
I say you ride with crutches, problem solved!
|
Then he could wear this awesome patch with pride!

Alantf, you need a friend who would lend you a Ural sidecar rig.

How about one of these?

As for rehab.... at first I had a physiotherapist coming in three times a week, but at €30 ($45) an hour, that was $135 a week, which was a bit too much on pension. A couple of weeks ago I went back to see the doctor in charge of rehabilitation, who said he would arrange for me to go to the hospital for physiotherapy twice a week, but I've heard nothing more from him. Seems like they're more interested in people with private insurance than me who wants it doing on the national health service insurance. All I can do now is wait, but every day I try to do more walking to build up the muscles. Yesterday I walked down into the village to get our lottery tickets. Tough going, but if no one else is going to help me, I'm determined to do it on my own. :)

Attaboy! I've had 3 relatives that I know of suffer maladies of some sort, and instead of doing their rehab and getting back to what they were, they let the muscles atrophy and, in one case, someone actually lost the use of their arm... Walking through the discomfort is commendable. As long as it doesn't hurt to the point of falling down dead, then it's probably good for your muscles :)
An excellent item for something like what you're dealing with are these small stationary pedal machines. You simply put it in the floor in front of you and even while you are sitting down, you can pedal and build up some muscle strength and increase your range of motion in the lower portion of the leg while diminishing impact pain. I usually get them at health supply stores, but I don't know if that's an option for you. If it's not, they're all over the place online. http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/02...53_500X500.jpg I keep one under my desk just for shits and giggles - and to alleviate the old desk leg syndrome |
Update!!!! I've just had a phone call to say that they're coming to pick me up at nine tomorrow morning, and I'm to have physiotherapy three times a week :- Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. :clap:I'll keep you posted.

Awesome man. Congrats!
|
Sounds good!
Good Luck. |

It's my third week of physiotherapy, and I'm walking much better now, so yesterday I thought I'd see if I might be able to ride again. The bike's been standing for three months, so I charged up the battery, and it started first time. I took a ride round the underground parking, but, unfortunately, I found that I couldn't operate the shift easily, because of my leg. Oh well, summer's here, but it doesn't look like I'll be riding for a while yet.
|
Ahhh, the sound of a little Gz motor waking up after a long rest. It makes your heart happy, doesn't it?
No tears, buddy. Rehab can be a long process. Fact is, despite some difficulty, you DID ride around a little bit. So that's a step in the right direction. Range of motion will only increase with more therapy. You can even try mentally practicing the shifting motion with your left foot while sitting on the sofa watching re-runs of MASH. |
:hi: Keep active Alantf. Rocking chairs are for ooooooollld men.
|
Thanks for the updates, good to know you're getting there.
 |
Alantf, Rehab can be a real bitch, but well worth the effort. Over the years I have been in rehab more times than I care to remember. Each time I pushed myself harder than what was expected of me. Always proved doctors wrong when they told me I would never be able to do this or that again. From what I have read, you have the right frame of mind. Keep a smile on your face and keep going. Humor is the best thing for pain.

Done it!!!!!! 16 weeks tomorrow since the accident. For the last week I've been walking without a stick (cane) so today I thought it was time to try riding again. Just a coupla miles to the supermarket and back, but at least I'm back riding. :ride:
|
Congrats!
Very happy to hear that! |
Great to hear that you are back on 2 wheels Alan. Poco a poco!!
|

Happy to hear that you are doing so well. Fresh air and a ride, no matter how short, always makes things better. Pat yourself on the back, you deserve it!!!!!!
