Blue Ridge Parkway

Here are a couple of photos I took while on holiday driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina back in 2009. Would have loved to ridden a bike down the Parkway, but had to be satisfied with a rental Dodge Charger.

I had never seen anything like that before. Any ideas on the make of bike? I can't remember.

The bike in question is a Gold Wing by Honda. It has a lot of extra stuff on it that would make it on par with a good new car price wise. Overall that is a neat touring rig with a lot of storage in the trailer.

Thanks for that. Yes it is some setup. I was very envious at the time. The Blue Ridge Parkway and the Skyline Drive, further north in Virginia are ideal for touring bikes. We were there at the end of October and the weather was just right. Fantastic scenery and friendly people.

Yes it is beautiful down there. I was in Tenn and North Carolina in 2007. Rented a Kawi KLR 650 and rode The Dragon. Had a great trip and met up with some of the most wonderful people on the planet.

Now you really are making me envious!

Yup, the Dragon was a fun ride but if I did it again I would ride the Parkway instead. The Dragon is pretty intense with no time to play look. Take your eyes off the road for a moment and you become part of the scenery.

2009 is when I rode it all the way up and back.

How long did that take you? Any problems with the GZ? What was your favourite section?

We left my house which is 77 miles from Cherokee, NC on Friday morning.
We got back a little after noon an Monday.

We did a couple of 400 mile days, at 45 mph speed limit that's a long day.
Over 400 miles was in in rain or fog or both.

The bike ran fine.

That must have been some trip. We started at the Front Royal entrance to the Skyline and drove all the way down to Cherokee, joining the Blue Ridge Parkway at Waynesboro. We took it slow and had overnight stops at Charlottesville, Roanoake, Boone and Asheville. We hit some bad fog in Boone, loved Blowing Rock. Plenty of temperature variations along the way, from 32F on some of the tops and up to 78F lower down.

Did the trip in the fall, brilliant colours. Would love to do it on a bike.

Hoping to visit the USA again this fall. Thinking of Yellowstone and then possibly Nashville.

By the way, excellent photos!
