20 bike in 3 years.
Was talking to a coffee bud yesterday. He is now on a BMW 1150. That makes it 20 bikes bought and traded off in 3 years. One Triumph, 18 Japanses bikes and now a German bike. I really wonder if he will ever find one that fits his head. Oddly enought he kept a Vstom 650 the longest but swapped it off after doing an Iron Butt 1000. He buys new, used or demos. The dealerships love him.
He was the guy who made Utube at 235 km(146mph)according to a police helicopter and chase car. That was on his Triumph last year. He imediately bought a slower bike, a Suzuki C-50 but the need for speed reared it's head after 3 weeks. Back to yesterday. The reason for the BMW. He dropped his Honda ST1300 and couldn't pick it up by himself. RIGHT!!. The BMW is lighter so why not. I wonder how long the BMW will last him.  |

Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
Where the hell does the money come from to buy all these bikes anyway? Geez, i cant even get a second bike right now if my life depended on it.
|
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
Money comes from a better than average job or as in my friend's case a well paid wife/doctor. Maybe family money too. I don't even know if he has a job.
When I was part of the workforce I was hard pressed to buy anything with cash and that included a full tank of gas. Now after retiring and downsizing a lot I have some spare cash to play with. Not a lot mind you but I never worry about the rent. |

Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
1978: Mongomery Ward 3.5hp briggs mini bike (the bike that started it all for me)
1980: 1977 XR80 trail bike ( tough myself how to shift (many lowsides and cuts and gashes) 1981: '77 RM125 MX bike (dumb move on my part, I barely knew how to correctly ride, but I begged my dad to let me get it ) 1983 82 RM125 started racing MX, the beginning of the end of a healthy body ! LOL 1985 '84 KX125 1988 1988 KX125 20 years old and my first brand new bike ! paid cash , and what an awesome feeling 1988 1973 Suzuki T500 first street bike, wow what a POS pig heavy bike, crappy brakes, wobbly steering, but had some balls ! 1989 1984 Suzuki GS550L much better handling, but whimpy power untill 10K rpm! LOL 1991 1984 Yammi RZ350, now I had speed, handling, brakes, and way too many speeding tickets. 1995 91 KX250 (gave up street riding, and back to club racing dirt) 1997 1990 Kawi ZX10 (back to street, but mentally more matured) 2003 1982 GS1100E (my first full bike restoration) 2005 2001 Kawi KX500 (always wanted a SICK big bore 2 stroke, and I def got what I asked for )! :skull: 2007 2007 Yammi YZ450F back to dirt, and some winter ice riding 2007 2006 Harley Fatboy 2008 1987 GSXR750 my 2nd full restoration 2010 1984 Kawi GPz1100 my 3rd restoration 2011 2001 GZ250 A little purchase history of me. Sold most all of these as for one reason or another because the bike just didn't do it for me. My only regret is selling the '82 GS1100E, what a fantastic all around bike to ride ! Shoulda' kept that girl!!! |
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
I count 18 bikes total. If you had them all right now you could open your own store. And yeah, you should have kept the GS1100E. Awesome bike.

Went past the bike shop today, and there it was. Nearly new. Immediately fell in love with it. The bike of my dreams. 680cc, built in luggage etc etc etc. Trouble is, it'll probably be gone before I win the lottery. |
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
1976: new 1975 125 Suzuki RV. Basically a 2 wheeled tractor that did nothing well except 100 miles per gallon.
1978: new 1978 Suzuki GT 750 Water Pumper. 1979: 2 new Suzuki SP 370 enduros for me and the wifey. 1981: new 1981 Yamaha DT 175 for wifey. 1982: new 1982 Yamaha DT 175 for me. 1988: 1988 Kawi KDX 200 dirt bike. Most fun I ever had with my clothes on. Stayed with me for 9 years. 2005: 2005 Vstrom 650. Still got it but it is for sale. |

Are you thinking of PE 370? That was a neat off road bike. The SP 370 was an attempt to build a 4 stroke street legal enduro that failed in so many ways. As for a keeper, well, stuff happens. I kept her, kept her family, kept the bills paid and finally retained a lawyer after she left. No idea if she is dead or alive now. |

No more talk about the ex either obviously not a good subject and you've moved on sorry ! I've too have ridden many a KDX200 and the 220's agreed those are tried and true awesome versatile trail bikes ! |
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
  Oh I can talk about the ex now without my blood pressure going sky high. She was a good example of who not to marry. Of course I was blind as many men are and suffered the consequences.

Here's my '82 GS1100E restoration : http://www.thegsresources.com/halloffam ... june06.htm[/quote:78cr5e5p] OOOOOOOOOH, that is so pretty. Beautifully restored. It seems the bikes from the 80's were the best looking and most user friendly when it came to comfy ergonomics. Many of the older GS models are just too nice throw out and happily find a new home for a caring owner. A friend has an 84 GS 1100 and rides to work as often as possible. It has a custom swing arm and assorted other upgrades that make it a killer bike but is still streetable. He has another that was used as a drag bike in Eastern Canada and is just too much for the street and is very hard to ride at a normal pace. I think my two fav bikes for appearance are the older V-Max and the Kawi Lawson replicas. They look all business and can prove it too. Good thing I never got a really fast bike cause I would surely be dead long ago. I had enough narrow escapes in cages when I was younger. Passed a LEO with radar one day at 135 mph in a Rambler. His Dodge 440 interceptor had it's work out that day. LOL |
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
That's one beautiful machine!! Love the older bikes!!! :)

Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
Just got back from the coffee pit. There was an older BMW GS850(?) I think that looked like it just rolled out of the showroom. A nice shiny red paint job and pristine tires too.

Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
Yup, those were the days. The Universal Japanese Motorcycle took the riding world by storm with reliability and affordability. Although there are many more bikes to choose from these days many are a one use bike with no real ability to do many things well. Niche bikes can be fun but are generally expensive and higher maintenance units.
I'll stick with my Japanese Timex on Wheels, takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. |
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
Started this thread Aug 24th. My coffee bud traded the BMW for another Suzuki Sept 19th. It won't last though. He had a virtually identical Suzuki before and it lasted 3 weeks. Some things just make you go "Hmm."

Two of my close riding buddies have sport touring bikes, (a Kawi Concours, and a 900 Triumph Sprint) . I've tried them both, and fantastic bikes for what they were intended to do, but just not my liking... |
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
I have had the SV for one year and 12,000 miles.
There is not another bike that I want at this time. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-G...0/111_0652.JPG |
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
Well, my buddy Ed couldn't let the year go by.

Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
Nice looking bike. MG has some interesting design features but the parts and dealerships are all too rare in this neck of the woods. Really a pity as the bikes are made to be ridden and offer a decent riding position.
A friend has a 2007 Norge 1200 and it is a beautiful machine. |
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
The dealer is 150 miles away, but it is one of our ride points.

Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
Just talked to Manny at the coffee shop. He traded his C-50 for another bike. I think that is #20 now. A really sweet Honda 1000 V-twin sport bike. He is already planning on a different bike by the end of May.
He still says the Vstrom 650 was the best overall but he rarely buys any model twice. He did however have 2 C-50 bikes. All I can do is laugh and shake my head. He is the ultimate shopper. |
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
My buddy Ed has the hots for the new 500 x from Honda. He will buy one when they hit the dealers. |
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
I sat on one at the bike show. It didn't stir any juices but that's not to say it isn't a good bike. It just didn't feel good up close and personal. Riding one might be a whole different story though.

Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
Mannie is at it again since my last post. He had a Honda sport touring model of some description which lasted a few weeks. Switched to a Yamaha 1100 cruiser. Tomorrow he picks up a slightly used Vstrom 1000. He plans on a Vstrom 650 as soon as he does an Iron Butt with the 1000.
|
Re: 20 bike in 3 years.
Well I guess the money is no good if it is just sitting in the bank.
|
Mannie does it again and again and again and again. Last week he had a 2012 Yamaha adventure bike. I hadn't seen it before. Today there was a 2006 H-D under his butt. That makes 27 bikes in his 5th season of riding. I expect he will have another bike in 5 or 6 weeks.
|
Mannie does it again. #28 is a slightly used Suzuki Hyabusa. I wonder how long it will take the local LEOs to stop him and impound his bike for tripling the speed limit. A well known story for Mannie of course, he had 2 bikes impounded in 2 weeks a couple years ago. He even had a police helicopter chasing him down the highway. I think he is slightly crazy but that just my opinion.
