ok... I read somewhere that it could me that the mixture is either too rich or too lean. Is that right?

I think it is a combo of lean mixtures and heat which is always going to occur no matter how easy you turn the throttle.

It's from leaving the choke on too long while idling which causes a rich mixture to burn in the pipes. Getting it out is hard work. On my 650 the previous owner caused the bluing and I tried Blue Job but gave up after a couple of hours. As WW said...it's a sign the bike is used.
