My weighted piece for the end of the throttle side handlebar needed a quick paint job and I removed. After straightening the bolt I reinstalled it and it seemed like the bolt was in right but it came loose. No luck rethreading that bolt now because of a issue which I need to learn more about. How can I resolve the assembly to bolt gap that seems to be what I am now confronting?

I had the same problem after a lady in an SUB backed into my parked bike and badly bent the barend.

I couldn't get the thing to reset, even with a brand new bolt. So, I just bought some aftermarket expander barends and replaced them. It's just about as cheap as getting mew bolts.

I never could fish the nut out of there. It may be part of the bar.

Well, is bar end what the part is known as and where do you find after-market parts. 1999 GZ250 compatible w/newer model parts?

It's called a bar end weight. Pretty sure the GZ's are all the same going back to about 1995.

At the end of that long bolt.........inside the bar........is a rubber expansion plug, a nut and a washer.

Too late now, but the key is to only loosen the bolt a bit and then PULL the whole assembly out as one piece.

If you unscrew it too far, the nut falls off behind the rubber plug and then you are screwed.

Some people have been able to fish the pieces out.....with a bent coat hanger or similar.

Just search Ebay or your favorite parts place for "barend" or "bar end" or "bar end weights" or any combination of those words. Any expansion type barend will work, as long as they are 7/8" bars, like ours.
