View Full Version : Quick valve adj query.

This query is to all of you that set your own valve lash....

I went to do my 3000 mile check and found that the right intake valve had eaten up all
of it's play since the last I set it... I mean no clearance at all.
All the other valves were about dead on from last check.

First) Do your clearances wear open or closed?
Second) Have you had a valve all of a sudden sink in it's seat or the like?

Valves tighten as they wear & don't usually move that quickly unless you were off on your last adjustment. :)

So now I'm confuzzled.
My first adjustment wasn't long after getting the bike. I did it cuz I was starting to get a lot of valvetrain
noise from the head area. I set very precisely and noise was gone.
They were all way to much clearance.
This time I felt the need to check again because of noise from head....
I find 3 valves dead on and one valve down to no clearance.
Reset the clearance and now the extra noise is gone again.

Have no idea what to think now.

A little uncommon as valve clearances normally tighten.At the valve sinks into the valve seat with wear the clearance between stem & adjuster decrease causing the valves to get tighter.But your case is not unheard of........Just ride & keep a eye on her. :)

Could it possibly be that you didn't nip up the locknut sufficiently, when you set the valves, and it's unscrewed itself? :hmm:

Nope. Plenty tight.
I'll just need to keep an eye on this.
