Hello. So my gz has been idling high since I've owned it. Currently at 12xxx miles. I just cleaned the carburetor and it's still idling rather high. Attached is a picture of the right side of the carb. I'm thinking maybe one of the exposed holes needs to be plugged? Also the idle screw has been adjusted. All the way out doesn't affect its idle

Yes.. But are your throttle cables adjusted properly?
Does the engine warm idle change with steering from lock to lock at a stop?

Sorry forgot to mention throttle has been looked at. It doesn't change when fully locked left or right.

Harumph. It's night out and I can't give mine a glance to compare.
A vacuum leak tends to cause rough idle and dying.
So the throttle cables aren't under tension 'eh.rm.

Easy starting and smooth idle? If high..

Warm engine idle's high smoothly with no choke?

Upon initial cold start, it doesn't idle so high. As it is warmed up it idles high. No choke needed to start it, ever honestly.

I did cover up one of the holes with my thumb and it idled significantly lower, enough so that I had to raise the idle screw, however this caused it to idle rough and die with the flick of the throttle.

Ok... Wow....
Now you got me.
:)
Your 47 minutes after hour post says to me your dead on to a bit rich in the mixture.
Your 49 minutes after hour post says to me mixture off and when vacuum leak is being covered by thumb you overcorrect off mixture.
Hopefully someone else has your answer soon enough or i'll hafta think on it cuz I'm ?_?

I'm wondering where your pilot screw is set.

Any signs someone else has dinked with carb?
Any screws show sign someone else has been before?
You cleaned carb?
Is the tin plug still covering pilot screw?

It's possible previous owner didn't put the jets back in the appropriate positions.

Or without understanding... Seated the pilot screw all the way down.

It's very possible. I'm just trying to avoid costly mechanic work. Might be the only solution though.

In the service manual, download available on this forum, On pg's 108 and 109 there are references to position and how to uncap to adjust pilot screw. If your's is capped then stop.
Wear out other potential failures first.... This is not a first resort diagnostic...
However.
IF your carb has signs of tampering.
And IF yours is already uncapped then I'd recommend getting a real nice fitting small screwdriver and slowly and gently tighten the pilot screw counting EXACTLY how many turns it requires to be fully seated.....
Clockwise.... Gently till it stops...
Don't screw that up...
Right that count down...
Then back off to where it was.
If somewhere between 1.75 and 4 turns then just return it to stock position.
If not in that count then still return to stock position and report here.

Again... Only do this if carb looks tampered with. Otherwise DISREGUARD..

One last warning.
If you're not comfortable trying this. DONT.
You can't blow your motor up but you can make it less usable than it already is if you don't respect the pilot screw and the service manual.
That being said. It's a simple procedure. If you f up then just seat the pilot screw gently and back out about 3
turns. (your results and your carb casting may vary)

Well upon trying to adjust the pilot screw, it's seized up pretty good. I don't want to strip the dang thing. *facepalm*

Spray some WD-40 into the screw that should help break it free.A good starting point is 2 1/2 turns out from lightly seated.Than with bike idling warm (choke off) adjust slowly to fastest/smoothest idle. :)
