View Full Version : Is my timing off? Bike won't run without choke and throttle

Hey guys this is my first post. I have been riding for about 6 months and have encountered my first problem.
Recently I just tightened my chain and made sure everything was properly aligned. Since doing this my bike will not turn over unless my choke is all the way on and if my idle is turned all the way up. Even once this is done I have to be pretty heavy on the throttle to just keep the bike from dying.
I'm wondering if this is because I adjusted the chain and messed with my timing??
Thanks for your help guys!

Unlikely to be connected with the chain. The timing on these bikes is controlled electronically. Sounds like carb. to me. Someone with more knowledge of carbs than me will be along soon.
Welcome to the forum.

Fawlty I thought carbs too but it only started happening as soon as I adjusted the chain

Sounds like definitely not the chain. Did you catch/hit anything while you were adjusting it?

Not that I can think of
Bike ran fine before adjusting. If I did hit something what could cause this?

Can't see how the chain tightening would affect the engine. Did you do something you are too embarrassed to tell us? Dropped the bike or something? We are all friends here so we won't laugh and point fingers. Any other little TLC moments you may have made and forgotten about?
Just a heads up concerning the chain tightening. Did you check your brake light for proper function? They will sometimes stick "on" because the rear wheel is moved further to the rear of the bike and actually pulls on the brake light switch. It is adjustable and located just to the rear of the brake pedal.

check for any air leak or damage air filter, my do the same wen I tried to run with the filter remove

Raul is very near one of my thoughts.
Your choke and hold throttle symptom sounds like major vacuum leak / running lean.
Tightened your drive chain?
Messed with your timing chain?
Messing with the timing chain can cause serious engine run issues.
You must be sure the timing mark at the crank (viewable through that bolt portal) is where
it's suppossed to be in relation with the cam position.
BE SURE that you got it right as per service manual.
One last bit of advice that can rule out these two eventualities....
When bike is running and you hit the road and give it the beans (full throttle) ....
Does it go like it suppossed to or fall on it's face barely excelerating...
I'm talking about 4000 rpm. Not idle.
If it revs out and accelerates normally in the rev then your timing is fine and you got mixture
problems.
If the motor just wont give up any power even at the high rpm's then you may very well have
bunked your timing (valves to piston)
Lemme simplify.
Can the bike hit 50 or 60 mph without trouble?
Yes? Timing is prolly ok. Check mixture. Carb clog or intake leaks.
No? Check your timing again as per engine section of s.m. to be sure.
Vacuum leaks.
Little hose from carb to petcock.
Boot connecting carb to head.
Other issues requiring to much choke or throttle or both.
Clogged pilot circuit (you did just work on the bike... Some rust in tank found its way to carb bowl?)

I also forgot to mention that once the bike finally decided to idle (about 10 mins of riding with heavy throttle and choke to keep it running) it begins to idle ok

I will throw in my two cents and agree with Spldant and Raul. Vaccum Leak. Check the easy things first.
