Hello All!
My Gz250 sat in the rain last night and somehow water got in the tank.
When I went to start it it did not turn on, so I emptied the tank and cleaned the carburetor. Now it only starts when i spray a little bit of starting fluid. Has anyone else had this problem before? If so how did you fix it? I'm kind of new to this but i really just want to get back on the road....

I'm not much help with the innards of a carb but I have an idea or 2. Did you have the carb off the bike? If so, did you reconnect the choke cable? Did you get the vacuum hoses on the rear of the fuel switch on correctly? One might not be on and is drawing air into the engine and leaning out the fuel mixture?
Some one with more experience will be along shortly to expand on my ideas and likely know of the problem and the actual fix. I doubt it is a serious problem so hang in there.

Thank you for replying I appreciate it a lot!! I did have the carb off and took the bowl out sprayed a little bit of carb cleaner but did not mess with the internals when I placed the carb back on the bike I made sure to reconnect all hoses exactly how it was taken off also when I took the carb out I got really watered down gas

Sounds like the float may be stuck blocking the flow of fuel to fill the bowl.Try tapping on the side of the bowl that may free the hung up float. :)

Thank you for your reply! I'm about 20 minutes from my house should I tap it with a wrench or just small taps with my hand? I'll let you know what happens

i tried tapping on the side and bottom of the bowl no response so I used a wrench...still nothing

Can you open the drain screw to verify if there is fuel in the bowl.......If's its dry you may need to remove the float bowl to unstick the float. :)

I can't seem to unscrew the screw on the bottom of the bowl it is stripped... :(

THen you will need to drop the whole bowl to verify that the float is not hung up & stopping fuel flow. :(

When I had the carb out earlier today the float was freely moving would I have to take the whole carb off again?

No......There is room to drop the bowl as long as you don't strip the screws.Have you removed the fuel line to be sure you have flow to the bowl?......If not I would do that first. :)

yes, when i put it on prime it freely flows also i can not get to the screws don't have a short enough screwdriver

KK you will need to remove the carb......Something is stopping the flow of fuel into the bowl........I bet the float is holding the needle closed against the seat. :)

Yep.....When you get the carb out & bowl off.....Hold the carb in upright position with petcock on "Prime"..... fuel should run out the seat. :)

okay so I just got the carb out here is a small vid trying to show you whats up any ideas on what i should do before putting the carb on

if the carb isn't the problem i think it could be the coil spark plug was changed less then 300 miles ago... also a little more history it died on me while driving at about 35 mph.. steady...

Would not be spark when it starts on a prime.....You have good fuel flow to fill the bowl right?

yeah bowl fills up fast have yet to put carb back on

Can you verify spark? Pull the plug, crank and see if there is a spark.... Does using the choke make any difference? With my bike I can just tell by how things sound when I crank it... Sometimes it'll start without choke, sometimes the choke is necessary...

Just inputting....

His bike starts when he primes it through the air cleaner. :)

Well, I'm thinking it's a vacuum issue.....unless worst case scenario no compression which would lead to fuel NOT being sucked into the chamber....

You can have air, spark and "fuel" but if compression is missing then fuel won't be drawn in. I believe starting fluid is easier to ignite and since it is more of a gas it is sucked into the cylinder easier....

What does your plug look like?!?!?!

You said you reconnected all hoses, but I just want to verify because there is an easy one to miss. It starts on the right side of the carb, travels in between it and the engine, and connects on the back of the petcock. It provides suction to allow the petcock to deliver fuel. This would explain why it works on PRIME but not on ON, as PRIME bypasses the requirement for a vacuum line. Unless I'm misunderstanding and it isn't starting on PRIME.

Although, I don't know why it would die on you at 35mph...! Sounds like fuel starvation either way.

Another user took a picture-- it starts behind the throttle cables:

You should be able to feel either the hose or the empty nipple if you reach behind the petcock!

Yep reconnected all the hoses sorry about the late reply changed ignition coil still nothing... I think it has no compression at this point I'm looking more forward to selling it and buying new

Just listened to the vid again. It sounds like it has compression as it turns over. I agree it is a fuel or vacuum problem but how did it happen so suddenly?

Sounds like you have a tank full of mung or rust. Probably will do it again. Just scoot down to an auto parts store and buy some Seafoam. Add the appropriate amount to a full tank and ride it. Repeat if needed.

Yep... Went about 50 miles then the issue started over.... :(
