View Full Version : GZ125 electrical fault

I know this is supposed to be for 250's but from what I understand there is not a lot of difference between them.
I'm still new to bikes so sorry in advance if I come across as a little stupid.
I'd been having problems with my choke since I my bike back in November. Upon inspection I realised the cable was stuck so I installed a new one. I also moved my clutch cable as it was looping over the Speedo so I moved to to run under it.
When all was reassembled I went to start it up but when I turned the key to on nothing happened. No lights lit up. Headlight won't come on. Nothing electrical would work.
I've put the battery on charge just in case this was the problem but it is reading a bit over 11v when tested with multimeter.
I am hoping this is the problem but thought I could ask for any advice for if this is not the case.

Also the only electrics I've touch was disconnecting the battery when I was putting the new cable on. I've also checked the fuse in the starter relay which is ok.

First thing I would check would be the ground cable from the frame to the battery. Check the fuses a second time as well.

All fine after charging the battery. Still no idea what caused the drain though.

When you say it was reading a bit over 11v, that's DEFINITELY low.The very minimum needed is 12.5v, and I'd be much happier seeing high twelves or low thirteens. As a check to see if the battery's ok, give it a low charge (my battery tender gives 0.75A) When it's charged, leave it for at least half an hour, then check the voltage. The GZ hasn't got a great charging system, and low voltage is the cause of a lot of problems that folk ask about, on this site. :tup:

After charging it was reading 13.4v, going to check it in a couple of days to see what it is then

After a good full charge the battery should settle down to 12.6v to 12.8v after sitting a
few days not connected to anything.
An open circuit test of 11 volts is pretty much a flat battery as was already mentioned.
If the battery takes several hours to get to full charge at .75 to 1 amp that's a good sign.
If it comes from 11 volts to full charge indicated rather quickly then you probably have lots
of buildup on the plates. (bad battery)
The battery should read high 11 to low 12 volts with the headlight on and engine off. (pre start)
