View Full Version : Ticking sound

I've noticed a ticking sound coming from somewhere around the carb; it's a little loud when the bike first starts, then gets quieter once it's warmed up. It seems to keep time with the cylinder firing, and it doesn't affect the ride at all. I haven't gotten around to taking things apart to check it out, but I think I might this weekend. Any ideas what might be happening? I can post video with sound later if necessary (although it might not be the greatest quality). Thanks.

Sounds like your valves(tappets). Have they ever been adjusted?

I just had the valves checked about 1000 miles ago and they were within spec. Just after I had the valves checked, I went down to Mexico and was driving on sand-covered roads and beaches for three days. After I returned, I blew out the air filter and changed the oil. The sound is like a lifter that's stuck. It's possible that the valves were just barely within spec when they were checked, now they might need adjusted; I've never done it before, but there's a how-to around here somewhere, right?

Or a tiny exhaust leak.
Don't think I'd panic unless it get louder.
I notice valve noise (actually cam noise) sometimes and not others.
It seems to be loudest when re-started hot.
P.S. Mechanical valve trains don't "stick".
