My daily ride is a Harley Ultra which I love. Upgraded the shocks, bars, saddle/ back rest and highway pegs to make it one comfortable ride. I bought my wife the GZ 250 to learn on and a starter bike. Well she rode it once or twice and then it sat. I am recovering from back surgery on L4 L5. Been a few weeks and I am needing a ride. The Ultra is 1000# and even lifting it off the jiffy stand is a bit much. The GZ 250 is only about 3 or 400# and a dream to move around the driveway.

Problem is its hard on the lower back on any bump. I have the shocks turned up to the highest point but...... I am 6' and 230#. Is there anything that can be done without spending a lot ???? Thanks in advance for all replies.

I'm surprised it bothers your back.
I have 2 crushed vertebrae in my lower back and the disc in between them is always out into the nerve channel. I have lived with discomfort (refuse to call it pain) for over 40 years. Anyway, when I ride my GZ250, it does not bother my back at all.
I'm sure our experts will be along soon to advise you about what else you can do to the bike if anything.
If you want some advice and something that might help your (if it is in your lower back) back...PM or email me privately.
Good Luck

Check out the kidney belts that many bike shops sell. I had a Gold Belt that I used for years. It had plastic staves in the back and a velcro closure system on the front. Somewhat elastic to allow movement but did a great job keeping my back straight and provided just enough support to make a big difference. I had a big problem with bruised discs for years and the Gold Belt was wonderful.
Many big box hardware stores sell basically the same idea for less to folks who do heavy lifting. Cheaper too.

How about a Gel Pad?
