Hey yall, I just bought a used 2003 GZ 250 that wont start. I have done the following:
Cleaned carbs twice(jets, needle, bowl, checked floats, not stuck)
New fuel filter
New Spark plug gapped at .6mm
I know gas is getting into the cylinder, ive cleaned the carb, and double checked it.
kickstand is up when trying to start, clutch pulled, fuel is in "on" position,
all hoses are hooked up.
I took spark plug out and kept it plugged in while starting, and toucjed to engine cylinder, and gets spark...
A friend and i tried push starting 10-15 times and still wont start....i have no idea what to do now...ive tried and fixed everything i can think of. wracking my brain!

Check valve clearance.(They may be to tight) Check air filter.(dirty or clogged) Check wiring connections from pick-up coil to CDI box. ( loose, broken, or dirty) Test compression. The only other thing I can think of would be sheared key on flywheel.(This would make timing off.)

Thanks!...Ok, so i also found something else...i checked the air filter, and there was oil/gas mixture puddled in the bottum of the air box! like 1/2inch full of it...so i cleaned it out, drained the oil, and theres gas mixed in with the oil, put in new oil and tried starting it..nuthing, theres no more oil/gas in the airbox, but nothing...???????

What setting is petcock set on? Should be on run or reserve. Sounds like it is on prim. pull spark plug and clean. After changing oil try starting. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Did you pull the drain plug at the bottom of air box ?

Change air cleaner. What setting is on the petcock? Should be on run or reserve. Sounds like it might be on prim. Some sludge is normal in the bottom of the air box. You should pull the plug on the hose at the bottom of the air box from time to time to drain the crap out. Remember to put the plug back in. If there is gas in oil, change filter as well as oil. Pull plug and clean or replace. Try starting. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

So i got it started! drained the oil box, drained the carb bowl, turned petcock to RES and took out the air filter, pulled on the gas and it fired up...it stayed runnin as long as i held the throttle or did NOT reinstall the gas covered air filter...what should i do next?

The first thing is put fuel in the tank. Apparently you're so low it won't pickup fuel in the run position. Also put in a new air filter.

Sorry it took so long to get back. Glad to hear you got it going. Agree with mole 2. New air cleaner. I would pull petcock and check the filters in it as well. When you get a chance, I would check the valve adjustment as well. They tighten up and cause alot of problems. When I checked mine, the exhaust had no clearance at all. Glad I checked when I did. Run seafoam thru gas tank on regular basis. Will Keep you and your bike happy. Enjoy the GZ.

The GZ will run on 87. No need to buy higher. This will save some money.

petcock is set at "ON"
The petcock doesn't have an ON setting. It's either RUN, PRI or RES.

So...... either the tank is empty, or there's a blockage in the petcock! :hmm:

You know that fuel won't flow from the "RUN" or "RES" settings on the petcock unless there is engine vacuum, right?

Yes. I got it running. but now it will only run with choke lever all the way forward, and full throttle...when i adjust throttle or choke, it dies.

ok, so i took it on a ride, and it will only run when choke is off and im givin throttle, and acts like its a car out of timeing, dogging, will catch power, then bog down...idk what to do next :/

Once it starts you can slowly turn the choke off as it warms up. The choke is a fuel enrichener for cold starts only and not needed after the initial start up. That may be a lot of the problem. Rich fuel and a fouled plug go hand in hand. Pull the plug and see if it is sooty or wet from fuel.

I rode it a couple miles yester day after new oil, filter, and air filter. spark plug was sooty, so i cleaned it off. I dont use choke at all, even in a cold start...if i do, it dies. it wil start up and run as long as im giving it throttle. :hmm:

Are you sure that the big white knob under the carb has been adjusted to give 1200 to 1400 RPM idle speed? (This is Suzuki recommended idle speed when the engine is hot)
