my name's matt, and I have a problem. I buy cheap bikes too much, and as such, I don't do much riding at all.
I'm currently trying to sell a virago 750 bobber I have built. I'm not soliciting here... craigslist will come through soon, I can feel it.
once it sells, I have my eye on a gz250 locally that the guy wants 1100 for. I really really really want it. this will be like my 7th bike. hopefully it will be my next commuter. I'm not thrilled about the prospect of not being able to terrorize the locals and out run fast dogs, but I like little bikes, and I llike not paying a lot for gas.

im curious about something. the bike I'm looking at is a 2001. it has 2 exhaust pipes coming out the front, and by all appearances it looks like a parallel twin. I keep seeing the gz250 describes as a single. am I missing something here? the newer gz's have the same single cyl engine as the tu250, right? but the older ones, are twins, right?

I have seen only a couple of good, or decent cafe'd gz's, and plenty of good little gz bobbers. is there something preventing the gz from being cafe'd?

Nope. None of the GZ250s are twins. They are all single cylinder thumpers with what Suzuki calls a Twin Dome Combustion Chamber (TDCC). Who knows if it actually helps with combustion as they claim, but it is what it is.

Glad to have you around - $1100 is a pretty good price as long as everything works and there are no issues. Ask him about oil changes and valve adjustments. Listen for top end rattle. They are very simple to work on, but that vintage has been showing up lately with dropped valves because people have neglected adjustments for so long.

Welcome Matt. Glad to have you join us. You aren't the first to assume the GZ is a twin. A 4 valve head with separate exhaust pipes for the valves will do that. Don't ask me how I know. lol.
There is a wealth of knowledge and experience here to draw upon so don't be afraid to ask a question. And there are no stupid questions in my opinion, just folks who need an answer.

Thanks for the welcome. I like old, or classic styled bikes, and its really tough for me, sometimes, to not dive into a bike, changing things around, making it mine, and well, historically screwing things up in one way or another, lol.

What i really want is a tu250, but that's far from my budget right now.

The rear fender on the gz displeases me. I'll have to do something with that. It looks way too big for the short swinger and wheel. Is there a larger spoked wheel that is known to swap onto the rear?
