Good morning everyone! I'm having an issue with my 05. When I cold start it starts up just fine but after a bit it gets rough and if I let up on the throttle at all it dies. Then I can't restart it unless I let it set for a while. And ideas where to start looking? Thanks in advance for any help.
Mike

So it starts fine with choke but after the engine gets up to temp the bike dies and will not restart, right?

I can keep it going if I keep the throttle part way open. Also I just had the carb out, cleaned lest summer and it has been running beautifully up until now. When I do start it, with the choke open it is really rough and seem better if I close it. But as it warms up it gets worse. And I wouldn't say it ever makes it true operating temp.

Have you played with the idle adjustment knob at all? How much throttle are you having to use to keep it running?

Also, while it was apart, did you mess with the idle mixture screw any?

(Note, idle knob and mixture screw are two different things)

Nope, and like I said it ran great the rest of the season last year and thus far this year.

A little more info then, how many tanks have you run through the carb since you got it out of storage?

I mean, it sounds and feels as simple as an idle mixture problem. The choke circuits are pretty simple but they can get gummed up and stick open. But that usually causes problems at speed, and not keeping it running at idle. If you've only ran a couple of tanks of gas through the bike since you opened her up this season, then some old sediment may have moved deeper into the carb and you're just not getting the gas flow that you need. Can you handle pulling the carb and giving it another good cleaning yourself?

In my younger years, if it would stay running at speed. I would find an open piece of road and keep the revs up for as long as possible and drive as long and as far as I could without stopping. (That being said, there is nothing quite like pushing your bike for several miles with a fogged up helmet on your head...)

This probably be some my second tank, but I did run it pretty low this time. I like your idea, I'll try running some carb cleaner in the tank and see if it helps at all. I'd like to avoid taking the carb of but if I have to I can.

Well emptying most of the tank, dumping in some seafoam, starting the bike up and letting it run for a bit has worked. The bike is back up and running. Thanks everyone.

Don't forget that it has long been suggested to run some carb cleaner through every other tank of gas on these bikes. The carb is a solid piece but it's tiny passageways means that even a little bit of grit or varnish can cause you lots of headaches.

Also, an inline fuel filter between the petcock and carb is a huge piece of insurance. It'll keep out a great deal of gunk and they can be replaced each season. It's $4 investment that you don't want to overlook.

Glad you got it going, man.
Good job.
