View Full Version : What I did to my GZ250 today thread

I think every forum needs to have one of these, this is not limited to just GZ250's but all motorcycles and motor vehicles.

I'll start;

Today Qasual bought me a tank bag yay, and a hydration bladder ~

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g67/Tsukkie/2013-12-20232421_zpsf2f094ce.jpg (http://s53.photobucket.com/user/Tsukkie/media/2013-12-20232421_zpsf2f094ce.jpg.html)

Fits nicely, it is a Rapid transit recon 19 bag if anyone is wondering.

Goodies and a pic of Cathy. What a way to start my day. Thanks so much for the pic. Now we have a face to put the name to when we are here.

Cathy you will find the tank bag a wonderful place to keep things organized and safe. A fine place to keep a tire pressure gauge and a small 1st aid kit amongst other stuff. Oh yeah, the required camera of course.

Qasual - Lots of rain, I think it is about time to un-insure and clean the GZ up and put her in storage. After Cathy outgrows the GZ (Maybe never) I think a Cafe' racer is in order.

Qasual, I was just checking CL in Vancouver. Some one is selling a 1989 Honda Spada 250. Did a little research and it is quite a neat bike. Might be a good fit for Cathy. Still light weight enough and looks to be a good physical fit too. Not really meant for a 6 foot rider. And 40 HP out of a 250 V-twin.

Tons of 250cc sportsbike getting introduced though, that may be interesting.

On topic : I sat on the CBR and missed riding :S .

Cathy,

You'll have to give a us a pic of the tank bag when it's installed. I like the idea of a bag but not necessarily sure if I like the look.

Not sure if Cathy's is the same, but mine has straps to turn it into a backpack when I leave the bike.b61.jpg (http://www.gz250bike.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=14&stc=1&d=1387809894)

That's a nice feature. Does your helmet fit in that bag?

Also, is it that tall when it's on the bike?

alantf
12-23-2013, 12:15 PM
Yes (although my back box is big enough to take two helmets) and the bag expands even bigger, by means of a zipper around the base. It also came with an elasticated, clear plastic, cover for when it rains. Another useful feature is a clear map pocket on the top. I've got saddle bags, a big back box, and the tank bag, because my GZ is a workhorse.

Cathy
12-23-2013, 12:28 PM
Not as tall as the handle bars, it was smaller then I thought it was. Still super useful though, I don't like saddlebags. Mine is a Rapid Transit Recon 19.

ALantf....workhorse sounds right

Goose51683
12-23-2013, 12:31 PM
Cathy,

I'm not a saddle bag fan either, especially since i chopped the bars off to hold them.

I like that tank bag though.

Question...did the red nose come stock?

Cathy
12-23-2013, 12:41 PM
It is a special GZ :3

What did everyone else do to their bikes or is planning to do. Upgrades, shopping, gear ?

Cathy

Qasual - I installed her trickle charger set up tonight, it's so warm I might take it out for a quick cruise and have some dinner.

Here is how I attached it and how I hid it under the tank.

Do you have an actual Battery Tender? They seem to be the most popular and reliable. What I found is just plugging in the BT once a month for an hour was enough to keep the bikes happy. We also have the same temps as you do.

Cathy
12-24-2013, 02:13 AM
Qasual - I made it a habit to just plug it in after parking the bikes at home. No harm since it is a smart charger. I did get Cathy's BT for $10 off of motorcycle superstore so I might keep a eye on it just in case.

Looks like it might be in just the right spot to get full of water when it rains. Not good. I've run mine to the tool box under the saddle. All it needs is a turn of the key, pull up the saddle, and plug in. No chance of it getting wet. ;)

In September when I first bought my gz250 the speedometer light did not work. I took it apart and the bulb was blown. I went to work and fixed up a 7 color led light and took it home and wired it into the speedometer. It is not extremely bright, I would say it is just the right brightness for me . The speedometer slowly changes different colors. I will try to get a video of it soon so everyone can check it out.

today I changed my front brake pads. nice simple job. then I went for about a twenty mile ride. good ride, partly cloudy but nice.

Cathy
12-29-2013, 03:41 AM
Qasual - How did you break them in ?

Did you do some brake maneuvers at variable speeds and what not. Just wondering, I'm not sure if it is the same like a car.

Water Warrior 2
12-29-2013, 04:01 AM
A few slightly hard stops will help the brake pads bed in for maximum performance. I wouldn't bother for myself but that what some folks say. Unless you got real hard pads it won't make much difference in my opinion. Ride the bike and be happy the brakes work when called upon to slow the bike in a predictable manner.

today for my gz I started doing the drivers backrest project. I was hit by a drunk driver in july 2012 and have neck and back problems. I'm sure this shoud help me a lot on the longer rides I want to make next year. I have the bracket done and waiting for the paint to dry. when the project is complete I will post some pics. oh yeah, I got the idea from this forum so thank you guys and girls for the great info and pics and ideas.

Qasual - Today I thought of tires and started looking for fun. I found out that the Kenda makes rear tires in 120-90-16 as well as 130-90-15 but unfortunately I can not find anyone using 120-90-16 in the front. Doesn't seem like a huge difference on the calculator but is anyone running it or have any fitting issues ?

Cathy, have you come across this post?
If a 120/80-16 can work, then a 120/90 should. Worst case, just raise the front fender a little bit.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Modifying the GZ - What's Available?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There aren't many tire options for our bike that come in a matching set. There are, however, many options if you don't mind mixing up tire brands and/or going to a slightly smaller tire up front.

The factory tires sizes are: 110/90-16 (F) & 130/90-15 (R)

The rim width for the front wheel is 2.5" and the rear wheel width is 3.0"
That being the case, a size 100/90-16 front tire will work on this bike. It does have an overall diameter decrease of 9mm over the 110/90-16 but that isn't really very drastic.

Samato has verified that alternate tire size 100/90-16 will mount up with no problem.

As well, the 120/80-16 alternate tire size is another choice for the front tire and has been successfully mounted by MRLMD1.

Factory replacement tires: 110/90-16 & 130/90-15
Dunlop D404 (only available through a Suzuki dealer)
Metzeler ME77 (only available through a Suzuki dealer)
Cheng Shin C906 & C907 (possibly no longer available)

Rear Factory Replacements:
Kenda Challenger
Pirelli MT66 (Route 66)
Maxxis M6103
Cheng Shin Marquis
Metzeler Me 77

Factory Replacement Front:
GBC Green Shark
Metzler Lasertec
Pirelli Sport Demon
Avon Roadrider AM26
Conti Ultra TKV11
Kenda K671 & K673

100/90-16 Front:
Bridgestone BT45
Maxxis M6002
Cheng Shin C6000
Kenda Cruiser
IRC Durotour

Matching tires with low profile front: 100/91-16 & 130/90-15:
Kenda Cruiser

well I got the driver backrest on my gz done. I still have to go for a longer ride to see how it feels. went up the street and back felt fine. it supports me in the middle of my back at this height. I may lower it depending on how the longer ride feels. here are the pics. I bought the backrest pad on ebay for 15$ new, the bracket from lowes for $7.50, had the black paint and screws and washers already. just had to warm the bracket up and bend it in a vise. the holes were already in the bracket and only had to drill one hole in it to mount it to the gz. I'm waiting for the passenger backrest to get here to put it on.

Qasual - Today I had another thought to a possible mini project. I do not know why I have not thought of this sooner but a 16t conversion is actually viable for Cathy, like dang. She is a 5'2" 9x lb little Asian girl, every thread on here I have skimmed through everyone is a minimum of 160 lbs +. Watch the oil usage with the T6. It may or may not use oil so be on your toes. In the future you can get Hi Flo HF-136 oil filters for less and they are the same thing minus the Suzuki name.

my first mode of transportation was a 1987 Honda elite 150 scooter. I rode that thing everywhere and 2 up a lot of the times. it was a real fun ride. I sold it to get money for a car , 83 Honda civic. I was about 50 lbs lighter back then too. I solder my sister my Honda elite 80 last November and she loves riding it all over Charleston s.c.

Goose51683

I have no problem with scooters, I have a problem with the 12 yr olds who ride them in the middle of the street pretending they are adults. Or the ones who will ride it on a county highway and swerve back and forth.

When gas realy jumped up a few years ago the number of scooters exploded around here. So did the number of scooter related accidents.

grasshopper
01-15-2014, 11:17 AM
yeah. I had an accident on my elite 150. I was going around a curve to fast and hit some sand, the back wheel slid out then gripped the road and flipped me and the scooter down the road. no major damage to me or the scooter. there are more mopeds than scooters around here. here you can get your motorcycle license on any bike over 50cc. I got mine on the elite80 scooter.

Moped's techincally have to have pedals. People use the words interchangeably out of habit, but they are legally different beasts.

around here we consider a moped to be under 50cc motor, no license plate or insurance needed, just a tag saying moped on it. a scooter is above 50cc and requires a license plate and insurance like a motorcycle does.

Moped and scooter designations can vary legally from state to state, but from what I recall the licensing difference is based on the CCs and not what the state happens to designate as a moped or a scooter. You can have 150cc mopeds, for example, that require licensing or you can have a 49cc scooter that does not. Follow?

Goose51683

Copy that.

I have to say I would proudly ride that scooter that looks like it came straight out of the jetsons....course I have secret Jane Jetson fantasies too so that might have something ot do with it. Haha....but seriously....

That would make for one heck of a hike. I tried walking at 10,000 ft. above sea level and nearly passed out. I am a wimp of course.
One of the climbers here in Squamish climbed Everest in preparation for Mt. K2 which is a much more difficult climb. I just can't imagine that much adventure in one lifetime.

A general rule of thumb is to mount the shield at or close to the same angle as the front forks. Also keep in mind not to mount it so high that you look through the shield. At most you want it just below eye level. Probably not a problem but just in case you need a little extra info.
If the shield comes with those goofy little bolts with wing nut heads that are hard to tighten by hand just swap in some regular bolts and use a real tool. That happened to Lynda once while we were on the road so we just stopped in at a hardware store and solved the problem.

Speaking of mirrors by Emgo. That is the product I received when I thought I would be getting genuine Honda mirrors. Not real impressed with the fact that they have flat glass rather than the slightly convex which is normal on bikes. Oh well, a small convex stick on will take care of that.

man I like the green on that magna 750. I loved my magna 750 a lot of power but man did she suck on gas lol

LOL. I hear that. I just installed some LED lights in the bottom of the saddle bags for more running lights.

This is where the green comes from. :D White paint/primer is the basecoat (same brand).

Qasual - Hit 135km/h today apparently, 120km/h on my tach is 135km/h on a ZX-R.

Man Cathy is taking forever to get into riding school. :(

A GPS seems to be the only way to get a true reading. Most bikes have a very optimistic speedo while the odometer is very accurate.

Today:
Removed stock mirrors and added bar end mirrors, have not yet driven with them but will do in about 3 hours, looking forward to it

Saturday:
Removed stock indicators and added mini stalk oval indicators (turn signals i should say ;))
There was no screen on it but now there is, it came from a bandit and fits great, not too big either, I prefer smaller screens to the huge ones, I wont be out on any motorways/freeways anyway.

A few weeks ago:
Removed stock bars and added "Medium Braced" ones, they are lower and much more comfortable for me.
Removed the chrome pieces from the rear fender too.

Tomorrow, I am getting a full service. It was lying up for 4 months before I took it so needs a good thorough service, after this one I will be doing it all myself (I hope!)

After that I need to replace the seat cover as it is ripped at the back, and I am sure something else will come up

I'll add a picture later on!

Looking good. I will never understand why the Suzuki marketing dept did not label U.S models as a Marauder when the extra decal on the tank is so impressive compared to a little flat label.

Noticed in your pic that the brake pedal is very high. You can adjust it to a lower position below your foot for easier and faster operation. The high position seems to be a factory default position.

Thanks, it certainly is looking different to when I got it first already.

Yes, I agree with you on the decal / labelling it is nicer on the euro model.

Oh great! that's a job for lunchtime tomorrow then: adjusting the brake pedal

edit: went out with the torch and its now done, much better!

A torch is really not needed. The brake pedal is designed to be adjusted with simple tools.

But... It was dark out, without the torch i would not have been able to see! (10pm here when i did it)

OH...................a torch is your flashlight. I had a vision of you out there with a hot flame and bending the pedal down after heating it.
Be sure to make a check for proper brake light function too. The brake light switch is adjustable too.

Haha gotcha.

Yeah I made sure that was all working, it is MUCH more comfortable now!

The mirrors are going to take a bit of getting used to though :ride:

Well, I pretty much had to keep two hands on him at all times or else he'd throw himself to the ground. He's kinda dramatic/needy like that.

Changed oil and filter on my gz today at 7,500 miles.

Even let out the oil through the side 17mm bolt. Been using Valvaline motorcycle 10w40 oil and glad I know about the cheaper oil filter than the Suzuki brand.
Oil was dirty brown, was glad I changed it. It had been about 2,500 miles of me owning and I did an oil change then for my own piece of mind.

Cleaned the air filter with compressed air.

Started easy quick cleaning the carb. with cleaner: In ON or RES position pull off the vacuum line to petcock. 2. Take off the fuel line from petcock. 3. Let carb. run out of gas while engine is running 4. Fill the fuel line to carb. with carb cleaner and run engine til it dies revving the engine some. 5. repeat once more and hook back up vacuum and fuel line.

Rode home after 11pm for 20 miles it was 57F and chilly at 55-61mph with jeans and two long sleeve shirts on and reflective vest. Bike performs better when its warmer outside. On the way to work, after 2pm it was 75F and maintained 61-65mph in 5th.

I ride 40 miles a day commuting to work and hit reserve around 178 miles on average.
157miles worst about 53mpg gunning it that tank, best 65mpg keeping 40-45mph and small stretches of 55mph.

Greased the chain earlier before work.

Bike does run better and healthy sounding but not by much, which is good it wasn't that much worse before.

My bike ran better after we re-jetted the carb. Stared much easier, smoother, also changed the front sprocket to a 16 tooth. For me those were the best mods on my bike. I might say another mod was re-doing the seat at a local shop,[ money well spent]. After those mods, I just enjoyed the bike. CMS

I like lights. The more the better. Even if you rarely ride at night or in fog they increase your presence on the road for oncoming traffic.

Did you do the work yourself Cathy? Think I need to go on the hunt for fork advice here. Today I changed the air filter and tightened the chain (first time for that for me doing myself).

Cathy

I had someone else do it, but rebuilding is harder than actually changing the major seals and oil so it would be okay for a novice mechanic. Just download the online manual and everything should be okay. Tools might a a small challenge though. Everything was done at home just not by me.

I just followed badbobs how to fix a slippery clutch as the clutch was slipping under acceleration. Im pretty much a complete novice to mechanics but needed this fixed.

It was a 100% success. Much more responsive in all gear changes and finds neutral much easier, no drag or slip, no leaks!

Had my gz250 for about three weeks now and finished getting it tuned up after it sat a couple years. I drilled out the idle mix screw plug and set the idle. Changed the oil and filter, it was dirty. Got an air filter cause the mice used the old one for storage. Built a stand and got the chain tightened and lubed. New spark plug the old one wasn't even tight in the hole, some blow by. This wasn't all one day but I had a great time learning as I worked. Even found out about Sea Foam. Bike is working so much better than that first test ride. Got some good info here. Thanks to all!

My bike lasted me the full Ren Fest season and now that Fest's over, I gave 'im a bit of love today. Replaced random bolts that had fallen out (2 of the sprocket cover bolts, the back back seat bolt, one of the plastic side covers bolts... just realized my back exhaust bolt is missing still... oops), adjusted the back brake light sensor cable so the light actually turns on when I brake, topped up the oil, replaced the valve cover seal that was leaking, and gave him a good bath (dirt roads and a wee bit of off road riding made a right good mess of him).
I need to replace the fork seals, the left one's leaking pretty good. I have the 2 rubber seals for each side and the fork fluid, reading on here people were talking about a copper gasket, so I may hafta look into that

Use a dab of Blue Loktite when replacing the lost bolts.

Sounds like you have been doing some riding and enjoying it.

Today, I looked longingly at the bikes in my friend's garage, checked the trickle chargers, and remembered that I need a new drain screw for my carburetor 'cause it's stripped.

Hopefully in the next few days, with the weather being slightly better, I'll fire them up and let'em run so the fuel stabilizer actually gets into that carb, and so they're not sitting all winter without being run. Doubt we'll actually get on the bikes for a ride, tho. Even in warmer weather (40 degrees), the ice and snow is likely to still be around and her experience isn't exactly... high.

Buddy of mine sold me his GZ a few weeks ago, and the first thing that needed to be done was a good clean job.

Ended up taking the front and rear fender, seat, air box, gas tank, side covers, chrome pieces on the rear of the bike off, and accompanying harness was completely disconnected from the frame, and zip tied to the front of the bike.

Doused all the oil/dirt mixture that coated the entire rear of the bike in degreaser, and watched years of grime just pour onto the floor, as well as a complete disassembly of the parts and pieces to get a real good cleaning.

Swapped bad indicator lights for LEDs while everything was taken apart (we had an influx of LED indicators for our trucks come into work that didn't end up working for what they needed. They were going to toss them anyways so they had no issue letting me take a few).

After removing a few minor rust spots from here and there, and coating the bare metal in a quick coat of paint, I scratched my head until I figured out which bolt went where and what fit what, I got her all back together.

Looks a million times better already, just gotta feed her some gas and fire her up in the morning.
