What happened to the other one?

The one from ebay didnt have a petcock hole on it. At all, no pre drilled hole for it or anything. So me and my brilliant ideas cut the old one off the old tank with some of the tank material around the threaded nipple the petcock gets tightened to. The only thing the new tank had was the 2 screw holes and the slot for the fuel gauge, but i dont have a fuel gauge so heres where my brilliant idea comes, haha. I put screws and tephlon tape in the screw holes on new tank, cut screw heads off. The cutout of old threaded nipple (for petcock) i jbwelded to the new tank, right over the fuel gauge slot, and hope it holds back fuel, but im not feeling it. Didnt fill gas tank yet.

I would love to see a photo of this hack job :)
If getting gas is a hassle, just try some rubbing alcohol or a bottle of carb cleaner to see if it will hold liquid. I would say to just run some tap water in there, but don't do that. Which JB weld did you use? There is one that is impervious to chemical breakdown that I used on a brake fluid reservoir and it lasted more than a year.

I bought the 2 tubes of JB weld that ya mix together, bought it at PepBoys.

Ebay gz tanks looks like shit with dents and rust. Might just get one from Suzuki, but the dealer is no longer open due to Sandy that bitch.

Rethink that... Even at Ronayers they are $531, which is insane.
At least a tank with dents will let the bike run.

Might be worth it to try cleaning up the Ebay tank. Make sure it doesn't leak and then hand it over to a body shop for dent removal or just filling in the dents if they aren't to bad. Could be a lot cheaper than a new tank. Either way you will have to spend some more $ to make things right.

Im worried it will leak from the Jb weld. Im stuck on this. Maybe grind off the piece i JB welded and clean it up with a grinder and do some real welding on the piece i cut off the old tank. I really dont want to spend that much on a new tank. Thats insane.

You're worried it will leak, or it has already started to leak?
I used a product called QuickSteel that is supposedly impervious to chemicals once it cures. It had lasted about 10 months when I sold the bike it was on... Those are poor-man's stop gap remedies, but they'll at least get you running. There are different kinds of JB weld, and if you just used the basic, I think the gas will eventually eat through it.
You just aren't going to know if your homemade fix works or not until you put some gas in it. Hell, test it with water. They're both liquids. At least you would know if it's water tight.

 Just remembered this. Had the front tire tread imprint on the wall inside my 1st van way back when. The imprint was horizontal 3 feet above the floor. Never try to ride a bike in the side door of a van. It will really hurt.

The mental image I have of this is incredible....
Yeah, my imagination was working full time with a piece of plywood for a ramp. I had just put the finishing touchs on a complete Mohagany interior and carpeting. A friend commented the tire mark added character to the interior.
The inside was tongue and groove Mohagany boards 3 inches wide. Horizontal on the walls and crossways(side to side) on the ceiling. A lot of work but it was worth it. Completely insulated and nearly soundproof too. That same friend actually bought the van after I had driven it for exactly 10 years and 140,000 miles. Sept 9th, 1974 to Sept 9th, 1984. He had it another 10 years.
And I never did take a pic of my handywork.

Nice looking tank, but the first pic, ya see the slot and 2 screw holes on the right side of the bottom of the tank, that is where the fuel gauge goes. When you flip the tank to install, that slot is now on the left where the petcock should be. This was my problem with the ebay tank. Thats the slot i covered with the cutout of the old tank for the petcock. Weird no ?
Rookie Rider
12-20-2012, 02:29 AM
Does the petcock come with the tank ?

12-20-2012, 02:39 AM
Uhh that slot is for the petcock. Theres no fuel guage on my bike. Ill put it together tomorrow and post a pic

Rookie Rider
12-20-2012, 07:38 AM
I know my 2000gz doesnt have a fuel gauge either. But inside the tank is the gauge stuff (on mine). The petcock hole should just be 1 pre drilled hole, correct? Maybe 3/4 in size more or less ?
jonathan180iq
12-20-2012, 10:17 AM
I'm not sure what bike you have man, but the pic he's posting is of a factory GZ250 tank... The opening that you see is designed for the factory petcock. Given that so many other things on your bike were switched over to something else (like the wheels) you may have a non standard petcock. So you've been trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.
Can you snap a pic of whatever the heck it is that you have going on down there?
Rookie Rider
12-20-2012, 11:42 AM
I will get pictures, hell yeah. Hahaa, crazy. Round peg in a square hole for sure. Then i will need that petcock that comes with the tank. I knew mine wasnt stock.

Even if you had to get a brand new petcock, they're just like $81 over @ Ronayers.
http://www.ronayers.com/Fiche/TypeID/26 ... FUEL_COCK_ (http://www.ronayers.com/Fiche/TypeID/26/Type/Motorcycle/MakeID/2/Make/Suzuki/YearID/47/Year/2006/ModelID/7858/Model/GZ250/GroupID/373514/Group/FUEL_COCK_)
So used needs to be less than that.

I'm selling him my petcock too for an extra $20, it's brand new, been used for about 2 miles while the mechanic was workin on it. I threw away the bolts though that hold the petcock on the tank though, so I'll order those off Ron Ayers and have 'em shipped to your house.

On a separate point, is that short stack pipe on the petcock how much fuel isn't getting into the tank? how long is it? about an inch? Id say 2cm but that still seems like a bit of fuel in the bottom of the tank
That is the reserve filter.
The long one is the main filter.

Thats what I thought, but looking at the size of the petcock valve the short stack (reserve) seems like it would leave a lot of inaccessible fuel in the tank?

Nah it doesn't leave that much fuel in the tank. maybe a mile's worth haha
