Stock 2007 GZ with 5600+ miles... sitting at a stop sign I'm getting a strong (almost makes your eyes water) smell like an old carburated Chevy pickup flooding... bike runs good and smooth, idles fine. Any thoughts? Is it valve adjustment time again? That was supposedly done at 3717 miles at dealer

Have you changed brands of gas lately? Maybe gas with more ethynol in it. That might have some effect but I doubt it would smell like an old Chevy. Has there been any noticeable change in the weather or atmospheric pressure lately? Just guessing here but it might lead to another thought pattern with a solution.

Or we can just blame Curiousity for disturbing the cosmic winds while landing on Mars............That was a fantastic achievement no matter how you slice it.

fumes coming up in your face when stopped. I would first look for gas leaking on a hot engine, petcock?, carb overflowing?, bad gas line?,ect.

Back on topic.
Good suggestion.
To smell that potent, you almost have to have something seeping. If the bike is otherwise running right, then it's seepage somewhere.

Blip the throttle. If the revs drop down too low and then come back up to stable, then you are running rich. If that doesn't happen, then just put the bike in neutral and give it a good eyeball to see what's going on. Could be an aged hose or a failing clamp. The petcock gasket is mentioned more on the forum than a bad hose, FWIW.

Blipped the throttle no problem there, can see no leaks or smell raw gas. Weather has gone from HOT dry and humid to cooler, week and a half of rain even more humid - smell got worse after rains started. We do have crappy gas down here (some places worse than others) I try to stay consistant on where I buy it though. Here's a thought - I did put injector cleaner through this last tank

Ahh, that may be it right there. Keep riding and fill up again to see if the smell goes away. If that fails send the bike to me.

Dunno if that's any different to carb cleaner...........but the GZ doesn't have injectors. :??:

Carb cleaners and injector cleaners are usually petroleum distillates of some sort and probably have many common properties. I don't imagine there is too much of a difference in many cases. Unless they are a high dollar special formula made exclusively for a carb or injector there is likely no harm done. I don't know for sure but I'm pretty sure both are mostly cleaners with the injector fluid possibly having a lubrication additive for the injectors.

True. The last bottle I put in my tractor was listed as a 'fuel injector and carb cleaner'. I have tom use it in the tractor; this 'mixed breed' gas with alcihol in it isn't good for any small engine.

well Berryman B-12 poor choice of words (injector instead of carb). Filled up yesterday, we'll see how it goes. Yes WW, if it fails to clear up I'll break the bike down, box it up and ship to you COD. Your bride should like that project in the living room this winter

No problem, her GZ spent it's first winter in the living room so I could add all the neat stuff to make a mini touring bike out of it. A warm carpeted garage is on my wish list. It sure beats cold unlite undeground parking.
