View Full Version : Oil Quantity

After searching the manual and this forum, the consensus is that my 2003 gz250 should take no more than 2 quarts of oil. HOWEVER, I just changed the oil on it. There was less than 1 quart of oil in the engine when I drained it. I replaced the oil in the engine with 2 quarts. I ran the bike for several minutes and waited a few minutes and checked the inspection window. It was dry. Barely a spray of oil was noticeable and certainly nowhere near the "L" line.

Should I add more oil? If so, how much is safe to add? Has anyone ever had a similar problem like this?

Thanks for the help!

The GZ takes less than 1 and 1/2 quarts.

The sight glass would be over the full mark with 2 quarts.

The side of the engine is stamped with the correct amount in mls.
1400 if I remember right.

You are checking the oil with the bike upright, not on the sidestand,???

"Once the new filter is installed, bolt the cover back on and re-install the oil drain bolt. You then need to fill the bike with 1.5 quarts of your favorite oil. If you are not changing the filter, I believe you only need to use 1.4 quarts."

I think what you did was overfill it to the point where
the sight glass is below the level of the oil!
Try draining a half quart or so, then see what happens.
Remember to check the level with the bike straight
up and down, NOT resting on the kickstand. What I do is
to rst the kickstand on a short piece of 2x4.

Could it do any damage to the engine if it is overfilled?

Not for a short time.If left over filled it can cause seals & gaskets to blow & leak.

Think Metric. 1300 ml of oil without a filter change. 1400 ml with a filter change.

Just made a correction, now I feel better.

Thank guys. I put in 1900ml. So I only need to drain 500ml.

Have fun draining it out! :)
Remember, it comes out a lot faster than when
filling it.
First time I did that, I drained over half of the oi out before I
realized how fast it was draining.

Probably easiest to drain it all out and refill as needed.

Yeah, drain it all out, and fill again with the bike straight up. Little by little and check the sight glass.

Why not just draw some out through the filler hole? It may take more time, but I think it would be more convenient and less messy.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Using a turkey baster and drawing it out.

That will work too .

Though a turkey thingy may not fit all the way down thru the filler hole.

My recent oil change was an overfill, and the mechanic today saw that instantly; below carburetor was a bit of oil and the black thing that is between the blocks and seal came out a bit... He drained it, so now is OK, little below full. He checked the rest of the bike, retighten the chain, and said it's good to go! Battery was fine and good thing is also, he is really versatile and with the heart and soul into mechanics (he's a biker too, collector of oldtimers, restauring big american cars...) For 20 minutes job, i was there almost 3 hours :)

Well I did it! I drained off about a half of a quart of oil. It turns out that a turkey baster doesn't fit. So I unscrewed the drain plug and held it there while a half a quart drained. Then I stuck the plug back in and screwed it up. Sure enough it is measuring just below the F line.

Maybe a straw would work. Put it in then hold your finger over the end of the.straw and pull it out. Straw should be full of oil if the straw reaches.

Or just slurp it out. Motor oil is good for lubing up the old creaky joints. It's good for you and your bike :) All we need now are flavored motor oils and we'll be set!

Use one of those plastic squeeze pump sprayers like on a Windex bottle or similar. The long straw will fit down to the oil level. Just have something to catch the oil you pump out.

Round of motor oil shots for everyone.
