Replace inner tube with a tire change?

Assuming one has not put holes in their inner tube, is there any reason to replace it when you put new tires on? Or to put it another way after how many years should I replace the inner tube? My gut says there's no need to replace it until it no longer holds air.

Technically you might be right, you can do that if you change your tire yourself and do not damage the old tube while removing the old tire. But if you had your tire changed at a dealership they charge around $50 for ttire change. With use, heat and pressure the rubber (old tube) might be risky and new tube is just around $13 and saves you another $50, additional transportation costs and the hassle in case it leaks.

It depends on how old the tube is.

If it was less than one year old and the condition was like new I would not change it. More than a year and I become a bit concerned about weather its worth it or not. Its a lot of work to change a tube later on. Almost as much as changing a tire. More if you have to do it on the side of the road in the dark.

Think safety. Imagine rolling down the highway at speed on your new tire with an old tube. Rubber does deteriorate with time. The tube is cheap when put on with a new tire. Could save you a world of hurt.
