2001 gz250 and DIY passenger backrest

we made this out of solid steel, had to heat them to bend, then welded the tabs on the bottom and also bonus oh sh!t handles.

i also added the pillows to it and painted it black. no way was i going to spend $300 on something that is junk lol.

i forgot to mention that i've since welded a luggage rack on the back of the backrest. the luggage rack works great with holding my backpack, ok i no longer use a backpack because the zippers can come open which is no fun...

hey thanks for the comments everyone.

i wanted my woman (who isn't a fan of being on the back of motorcycles) to be able to easily grab for the handles and not have to search for them, plus if i need i can strap or bungee cord cargo with them.

the one problem i have with the design of the handles would be that the handles will most likely interfere with the mounting of side boxes . maybe i can find some shallow side boxes or just go with a trunk on the luggage rack.

*side note - i'm still weighing the option of going with a new exhaust and air intake w/new jet, due to the current stock muffler has a slight high pitched tinny vibration (rattle) that sounds hollow. it only does it on certain instances and most people might not notice it but its starting wear on my nerves.

Thumper, you may find an easier route by looking at soft luggage. A hard trunk would not open well due to the sissy bar. Look at the products from Cortech and Nelson-Rigg for soft luggage options that are good quality and very functional. A sissy bar pack is an interesting piece and may catch your eye. Expandable soft luggage is really neat and not that expensive either.

Wally World has a motorcycle back pack that goes over the sissy bar. Holds quite a bit of gear, has a pouch for a hydration bladder, and support rods to help keep it upright. 28.00 and change. I bought one, and it holds a lot of clothes. Also has a few zippered pockets on the outside for small stuff.

How about a pic of that on the bike. Could be a cheap alternative for storage and portability.
