or utilitarian keeping in mind this is my only transportation and must go to market and such. (wife has car but we're gone opposite directions at same time.)

Nothing wrong with "utilitarian" if it does its job & the price is right. A lot of the luggage for the touring Beemers is square & utilitarian looking. Also the square versus rounded probably means that it'll hold more than my box.

$18 compared to $60+ Double clamped/lockable. 8 gal / 30.28 L plenty of storage. There is a story on another forum of a guy using one of these on his V-Strom to ride from New Jersey to California and back - he was very happy with it and others have followed his lead.

Alan, it's been years since I've seen a backrest rig up close, I had no idea the side braces were 1/8 inch.
Think I'll do more studying on this and check salvages

Nothing wrong with an $18 box if it suits your needs. Square is much better than a case with rounded corners and a pretty form. There is a Vstrom rider who travels from the far south in the U.S. to Canada every year and has a big square box that could hold an unassembled GZ for a spare bike. The utility and price make it a no brainer.

I have a utility crate on the back of my Honda scooter to carry groceries.

I use the little CH80 as a dingy behind my class C motorhome. It is also handy for treating the pets to a ride.

I always go with the motorcycle/scooter specific.

I will admit that the action packer can carry more and is double lockable and probably more resistant to wear should it fall down or something. But, for me, there is something about the planned, sloped lines of a motorcycle trunk. I also really like the ability to wire in some extra tail lighting and have it look factory installed, rather that have it look like a farm vehicle with some bulbs dangling off. ( I know it cab look better, but people do some crazy things.)

They are both very useful. If you're going to be doing some off-roading or need to carry some camping gear, then the Action Packer is the way to go. If you just need a place to lock your helmet and carry some essentials, then I think the bike-specific trunk is better.
