The front shocks on my GZ seem really weak... 2007 3800 miles. Is that the nature of the beast or is there some adjustment?

One thing to check is the cables and brake hose running through their guides and such. I have tracked down sounds and just tweaked the holders or guides a bit. If it is the actual forks it may be some dirt or grunge of some sort trying to work it's way into the seal where the inner top portion slides into the outer lower fork leg.

There is no adjustment like most sport bikes. To stiffen them up you could change to a 20w fork oil. Most bikes come with 10w from the factory.

Is changing the fluid in the forks something I would have a shop do, or, man up and do it myself (being totally green at motorcycle mechanics)? You want something wounded or killed - I'm an expert shot with 9mm, 40cal, 7.62 or .308 this I know how to do... working on a bike - not so much!!!

Under normal conditions the fluid doesn't need to be changed (there are no drains on the bottom of the forks) the fluid gets changed if & when the seals are replaced.

I just read something about the fork oil should be changed every year. Down here where winter lasts three weeks would 20w oil be good year round?

Yep,it would be fine.It makes the ride a little firmer.I use 20w in my 454,because our roads are rough.I would think once a year is excessive. Most bikes have a drain plug on each fork leg that makes changing the oil a lot easier.

Fork oil should be changed every 3 years or so. Fork oil gets contaminated over time from internal aluminum friction and moisture intrusion. If you have never changed the fork oil in many years, drain the fluid and have a smell.... (that fluid will smell like the $hithouse door of a tuna boat !!! )

stock GZ250 suspension is very soft, so the more you weigh, the thicker the viscosity oil should be used in the forks.
