Hello guys and girls!

My name is Primoz and i like youtr forum a lot. I'm a begginer at 35 and considering of buying GZ 250.
I'm a teacher in a school for kids with special needs and a musician (percussionist).

Your forum has a lot of vital information, since I'm lurking this forum for quite a while now.
Since tommorow I'm going to check GZ 250, 2000.
The seller is charging him 1350€ (approx. same $). It's my second bike to check. Any tips?
It has 34000 km (about 23k miles), pretty a lot, don't you think?

here's the link of my potencial marauder:

Thank you and hope to read you soon!

Hi and welcome to the forum! I don't know that much about pricing in Europe. 1350 Euro's = 1757 US$, and I know they sell brand new for 2,995 dollars. So, it's about half price?

There is a link here about buying a used bike and what to look for:
http://www.gz250bike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5084&p=56134&hilit=buying+used+bike#p56134

and this link is very very comprehensive on what to look for on a used bike:
http://www.clarity.net/~adam/buying-bike.html

Good luck! Your motorcycle is beautiful! I love the Marauder name badges.

edited: oh! I thought that link was the one you already own. It still is very beautiful.

Hey hey!

I'm glad of so many responses. I did my search more, and there is also one marauder 250, same year (2000), with less mileage (only 8000 km, around 5500 miles). I'm goin to check tommorow the first one, and next week for this one: http://www.avto.net/_MOTO/ad.asp?ID=5320201

I'll see next week. I'll check the links greatmaul posted. Thank you guys a lot. My friend told me that i should wait, the winter just began and i'm too excited... Need to calm down a bit... ;)

Nice looking bike. You may not need the bag supports. The rear shocks hold the bags out from the wheel but check that out personally for your own safety. 8000kms/5000miles is not a lot for that year bike. Keep in mind it likely needs a valve check/adjust and the tires/tubes if original are needing to be replaced due to age. Other than that I would think just some Tender Lovin Care with new fluids and checking for loose nuts and bolts will make it a winner.

Hey guys!

Yes, i was talking to the owner and he told me that motorcycle comes with everything that is on it ''AS SEEN ON AD''.
Tyres need to be changed, so there is 200 € extra expense for me. We set the meeting next week.
Thank you again for your TLC!

I like the 8000kms a lot better. Sounds like it has a lot of life left, and it looks great, too!

Do they have rider training courses in Slovenija? Does it snow there a lot?

It's supposed to be easier to buy a motorcycle in the winter because people aren't looking to go riding, so the prices are better.

PimpS
12-19-2011, 04:18 PM
Yeah! It's snowing just now. On saturday we had first snow...
Rider training courses? In Slovenija? ... Sure man! The laws or better the tickets and points we get here for speeding, driving under influence... geeez, man, u loose your licence, geting a bill (for driving 10 km/h over the limit: 250€ plus 3/17 pts)... or something like that, i just don't wanna get billed and drive by regulations, boring but cheaper and a lot more fun with music in the car... ;)

Because of the winter i can't get the motorcycle for a test run, but that's just the risk i have to take.

Slovenija is unknown to you, but trust me, if u come here you'll see... lovely country, small but versatile; geographically, climately,... :)

Good find. A small but beautiful country rich in history. As North Americans we think in terms of 200 years of history but the Europeans have 10 times that. One of the greatest things we can do in life is sit and listen to a person of European decent talk about their homeland and events that shaped their country.

Hello!

Yeah, it's been crazy in Slovenija and these parts around through the history... all the balkan region and around is facinating indeed.

I went and checked the first gz bike (23k miles...). I tried to be aware all of the tips you guys gave me and i must say that i was amazed by the state the bike is in. It's really bigger bike but a lot lower that i imagined. All though i was ahhh and drooling, well i tried not to be that enthusiastic about it, but still... My girlfriend was a lot more to the ground and we both inspected some question marks...

Here it goes:
Seller is older guy, who is on the first glance really a care taker of the bike and everything he has, everything clean in the garage, bike was covered... Bike is as i said astonishing looking... It's his daughter's bike, who doesn't use it, he has his own gz 250 (reddish colour, 2004) in the same place. So he digs this bikes a lot.
The bike was cold when started, and he start working without problem.
1. observations by my girlfriend was that soon (after 3 min) she smelled a bit of oil.
2. observation by me: the back brake was not going to loose the drum brake once i pushed it, so it was a bit squellin when bike moved (it was -2 degrees celzius), after he sat on it and give him a bit more move, it stopped.
3. observation: looking from seating on the bike, left side of an engine, where string goes in the machine (i think it's clutch), string was a bit torn (smaller string were hanging around) and after 3 min there was a bit of oil (few drops).
4. observation: when i sat on the bike, i pressed clutch and when i put in 1st gear the bike died. We didn't know what happened (i haven't loosen the clutch), we start it over and a guy put in 1st easily... I don't know what was that.

Tell me, what do you think?
Is it possible that oily smell was because of the (i'm ignorant and don't know how to call it, when you before u start the cold bike, we say u give him extra air to start easily...) that air which was too much after 3min gave him oily smelll? I hope you understand my english...

The seller was a nice guy, he took care of that bike for last 4 years good and he told me that these machines should go 40k miles without problem...

Neverthelles, i'm going to check other gz next week and we'll see.

GZ 250 is the bike for me, surely, i love it, it's really good looking and feels great sitting on it!

Thank you guys!

If you put the bike in gear with the side stand down, the bike will stall. This is a safety feature,so you don't ride off with the side stand down.It sounds like the clutch cable needs to be replaced. It is normal for the back brake to be a little stiff until the bike moves, especially when cold.

Of the 250cc bike I compared, this was the best in my opinion. If you ever see it next to the Yamaha Virago/V-Star 250, the Honda Nighthawk 250 or the Honda Rebel you will see that this is a much heavier bike. Those other bikes look like toys next to the GZ if you ask me.

I agree!

Choke it is then, girlfriend told me so, and i was skeptic,,, silly me. She's really good! :rawk:

What about smelling oil from exhaust, also choke?

There should be no smell of oil from the exhaust. If it was choke it should smell like unburnt fuel,or running very rich.

Sounds like the bike may be burning some oil.Run your finger inside the muffler,if your finger comes out black and oily, than the bike is burning oil.

Thanks for info, but if the bike burns oil, what does it mean... Is it critically ill or repairable? For what cost?
I'm a beginner, forgive my ignorance of mechanic... :??:

Hey all!

Happy and safe-riding new year!
Yeah it's a good thing that she's so levelheaded and down to earth, cause i was like a kid in a candy store. Anyway, we went to check other bike and we decided to buy it. I hope that this weekend a friend we'll be able to lend a van to pick up the marauder. I offered the price and the owner was pleased with the offer. I'm getting a bike with 8360 km, year 2000 for 1200 €. I need new tyres (have an offer for dunlop d404, both tyres, for 160€)...
I think that the chain we'll have to be changed, seems coroded (a bit greenish on same parts), friend told me that this isn't a problem, maybe it just needs to be cleaned and tensioned.
I HOPE I'll SHOW YOU MY BIKE NEXT WEEK! YIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
Thank you guys for all the infos!

At 8360km the chain shouldn't really need changing. Check the sprockets for wear too, although these shouldn't need changing either. First try a good cleaning and oiling. :2tup:

HHEEEELLLLOOOO!!!!

Proud and happy new owner of suzuki gz 250!!!!

Finally, after 300km made with mini van (peugeot partner, seats out), me and my girlfriend drove home 2000 suzuki. It was nice trip, but even nicer feeling when the Marauder PimpSeR was down on the garage floor... Two friends came over to put it out of a van. When we started it, it nicely worked. The only thing that we noticed, that me and girlfriend didn't when we were at sight seeing of a bike, was that it has a drilled hole in exhaust , back side of the exhaust, few centimeters away where two pipes get together. We saw it because of the condensated water that came out.
I'm planning to check this with my mechanic and I will propably fill it. Any suggestions?

Anyway, I can hardly wait for spring and summer! Yiha!

Thank you guys very much for everything!

ps: even got owners manual, i know what will i read this weekend...

Yes! DON'T FILL IT! It's supposed to be there, to let the water/moisture out, just like you saw. It comes from the factory like that. :)

Hello!

I just got my new tyres today and i took metzelers me77, nice price and i think they'll drive good. Although i wanted dunlop d404 which are stock tyres here. I enjoyed this weekend in bonding with my bike; cleaning, took out the old battery (it's Nitro, and it is a bit boosted, like swollen, so i'm searching for new one). Took down the saddlebags and back seat, fill the tank...

I have a few questions: I understand i can use additives for cleaning the carb, which are universal (for all the machines; boats, cars....)?
Does anyone have experiences with Saito Batteries?
Thank You!

Probably won't be able to get either in Slovenija. I can't get them over here, so I use a general fuel additive which says that it cleans the carb, valves etc. This works o.k. for me. :2tup:

Hello!

Yesterday was a great ride and happening! I met fellows and gals from the forum and their machines; There were yamahas (virago 1100, dragstar (xvs) 650), kawasakis (En (vulcan) 500, Vulcan 900 classic, Voyager 1700) and Honda shadow 750. Needles to say my Geezer was the smallest ;) I met great folks and on a way back (since i left earlier, messed up with the ride back (some wrong turns...) i had 1 bad and 1 good encounter: bad was that i came to a accident site (propably 5 minutes after the crash), since the ambulance came at the same time as me. It was motorcycle and older mercedes. Horrible site to see, when from the impact point, the biker flew over the road in to the bushes below the road, 30 m away from crash. Other bikers there were helping to locate their friend, who was conscius, but not feeling his leg. Bike was (judged by me9, was a rocket (colours of the tank pieces, suzuki gsr x (white, blue red). Seeing ahead and driving by a crash site, the rest of the bike, laying in the oil all around, thinking of this guy's bad day, made me feel so bad and for a moment took all the good of the day away.

The ride to the pause stop for fueling the PimpSerS and myself with a coffee, was a good thing: the bikers had a same stop and they invited me to share some road with them, since we had about 10km joined road to our home and then we went our ways. It was a great feeling driving in the snake of beautiful bikes. I came home in the evening, chilled to the bone, since the summer went by...

Great day!

Sounds like you had a great day. You made some new friends, attended a worthwhile gathering and had a fun road trip.
As for the accident, well stuff happens. Sounds like the sports bike rider may have been in over his head with power and speed. He will live to ride another day with a lesson learned the hard way. This is a good lesson for all of us. Bad things can happen at any moment. A rider must always be very aware of potential risks and ride accordingly. Yeah, it may take the fun out of some rides but the alternative can be costly and painful to yourself and others on the road.

Hello guys!

I've been lurking a lot less then usual. But i have some news and questions (again)...

I've checked this bike today - Triumph SpeedMaster, 865ccm, 61 HP...:

http://www.avto.net/_MOTO/ad.asp?ID=6485106

... and got jitters since then. I like it a lot and next week i'll check it with fellow mechanic to test it, check it...

Know, about questions:

- what do you think about Triumph? English bikes, most famous in my head at least by bonneville and Thruxton... and Rocket III of course...
- the thing is the right saddle bag is torn on the right top side - any idea how this could happen - on the bike (machine, body) no signs of any falling...) ?
- what could be wrong (just possibilities) if after you give throttle (still with choke on) and the moment the speed comes to idle (that's with the motor in neutral on the stand, not driving), you hear one CLICK (not loud, but a click) sound? Haven't heard it before on any bike...

That's it, otherwise the bike looks cool, i believe it has risen front pegs, the seller got the bike in his shop from other state (italy), it has all the papers and is legit (like many other cars and bikes). 37000km, 2005 year... WICKED BIKE

Any comments from you expert guys will make my soul and heart calmer...
