View Full Version : New exhaust tuning the carb in...

I went with the fail safe of getting both kill variables on the mixture screw and going dead in the middle of the two places that was 4.25 turns out do you think that is more than likely too many turns out it seems to be really rich and back fires some. But i am just going on the ride I am used to that has never been right from the day i got this bike. I was thinking that most likely the proper adjustment was somewhere at 3.75 to 3.5 turns out based on throttle response and backfiring. Please take note.... I installed a EMGO 12" Shorty with removable baffle. I made my adjustments with the baffle out. Because the fiberglass baffle was blown out after only 2 days of riding. i replaced the fiberglass with a hefty amount of steel wool and wrapped it semi-tightly knowing that the exhaust vibration would do its job at loosening it back up. so it is a baffle covered in steel wool no holes and the wool is about 3/8" thick all the way around. The and since there is more back pressure I think that I may still be off with 3.5 even.... any outlooks are welcome thanks in advance... p.s. I am not changing the pipe again just carb settings.

What main jet did you go with?
If you start with turning out idle adjustment, and then switch mains later, you'll have to start your idle adjustment all over.
Main jet is first.

Good.

If you have someone who can help you with an extra set of hands, get a small screw driver and do the idle adjustment on the fly.
Turn the screw in until it starts to sputter and die, then back it out maybe 1/4 or 1/2 turn more and you'll be set.

If you say you're too rich, then you're probably too rich. ;)

So go to the lean kill variable and then back out 3/8" of a turn?

More or less, yeah.
That way you know you're not too lean, and you can back it out to as close as you want to be to rich.
But anywhere in the middle should work.

so i can take it as far as i want to the rich side and not hurt anything but performance but at least a quarter turn out on the mix screw after it kills it is verifiably rich enough ?

About half way between lean & rich,were ever it idles the smoothest. :cool: :)

I would try a half turn or so out from the kill zone to smoothen the idle. This will keep a slightly richer mixture and allow a cooler burn rather than a leaner mixture and heat causing backfires.

Remember that idle mixture only affects idle to 1/4 throttle.If midrange is lean than you need to raise needle (shim).If running lean on top end,you need to go up on main jet.
