Hello. I just got this from Amazon dot com. $23 including shipping. I like it, looks strong enough, I also went to Home Depot and bought 5ft of the thickest chain they had. Does anybody else have a lock like this one? Can you share your opinions with me ?

I always used the fork lock. Were are you planning to put it?If you ever jump on the bike in a hurry and forget about it,you could some real damage to the bike,or yourself.

Disc locks are compact and relatively cheap. Easy to store on the bike when riding too. Our bikes have them and offer some peace of mind. Keep in mind that a lock of any sort will usually only deter an amateur thief.

Go on to webikeworld for their video of how long it takes to cut the very hardest steel security chains, like those even 1/2" thick. Like 15 -30 secs.
If somebody wants your bike they will get it, either by cutting the chain and riding it off, or picking it up into a van or pickup.
You can also get an alarm that will beep you if someone wiggles or moves your bike.
Buy insurance and don't rely on the lock or chain
If you use the fork lock, remember it's engaged. It's no fun to try and ride away with the front fork locked. I almost did that once. Be sure to check the forks for ability to move every time you start the bike, so you don't have to unstart it, remove the key, unlock the fork with the other key on your ring, then get back on the bike and restart it again. Dummy. If you forget it's locked and you try to ride off, you may very well go down.

I have a fork lock and I use it sometimes. It came with a springy lanyard-sort of thing that I drape on my handlebars to remind me the lock is in place. Yes, I'll admit I took off in a hurry one time and ....... went down in a hurry 2 feet later. :(
No lock will protect your bike from the serious thief. OTOH, chances of someone going to pro lengths to steel your $1500 bike are slim, especially if it's parked for a couple of hours on a busy street in the daytime. If you're parked in an underground lot over the weekend I'd invest in more stuff and some theft-specific insurance.

All you need to cut almost any chain is a hefty bolt cutter, and anybody can get one.
There are videos posted all over the internet and You Tube showing 2 guys on a busy street pulling up in a van and picking up a bike and putting it inside and driving off.
Insurance is still your best bet, the lock and chain will only discourage some very amateur thief. They will take bikes with disc locks too as it's fairly simple to replace a wheel or brake disc if they want the bike.
One of the best protections is actually to cover it up so no one knows what it is. And leaving it dirty and neglected looking is better than brand spanking new looking and shiny.

Dirty and neglected...............you just descibed my bike's appearance. Oh, and park beside a H-D.

Yeah that recently happened to me and i broke a few spokes - to be honest though i was surprised i didn't do it sooner

I use a similar lock (from magnum) but it's covered - i like that you can put it through the wheel and then around the sissy bar to keep it off the ground - maybe i'm just paranoid about dogs marking my bike as they're territory - there also pretty handy if your friend forgets his lock (happens all the time) and you want to lock both bikes with the one chain

ecr959 - I don't want to bust your bubble or harp on this anymore, but that chain can be cut with bolt cutters in 5 seconds and will only deter someone without bolt cutters (which is most people I would agree).

If you want to rely on that lock and chain when the bike is parked in a well-trafficked public space in the daytime, it's probably OK, but then you wouldn't need it anyway. If you think that will make a big difference if parked outside on a dimly lit quiet street, probably not.
All you are doing with any of these things is really making your bike a little less attractive and only a tiny bit more difficult to steal. It may make you feel better to use that, but like I said, If someone really wants your bike, it's theirs.

Seriously, check out this reference article and video from webbikeworld.com --- http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-alarms/

Fork lock and taking your keys with you is about as good as it gets.
No one steals Gz's anyway :)

If you park outside overnight, I guess I see why you would want the extra security. Otherwise, let insurance cover the cost of the replacement bike :)

Someone tried to steal my buddies license plate, not the bike. Can you believe these idiots out there?

It is more common than you think. Steal a fast bike and another plate, have fun till you break the bike.

Sorry, it's a 3 month old thread, I know! but I read in a book and it cracked me up, that you should:

1.) take a few scraggly loose wires and attach them so they're hanging out the side of your bike,
2.) take some bondo and put a chunk of it on the side of your engine casing.
3.) stick some duct tape on your seat, even if your seat is in perfect condition.

All of these things may make your bike look less attractive to thieves, although I'd test the duct tape thing first to see if it's going to mess up your leather/vinyl.

Nothing. Welcome to Raleigh!

A few years ago when I was riding a 150 lb honda scooter, I parked it next to a guy in a parking lot. He asked, "What's to stop someone from stealing it?" I said, "The law." Ultimately that's about it. Th Gz doesn't weight much and tow people could probably cart it off but what are they going to get? Some parts that are going to be hard to unload or at best if they can get it titled, maybe 2000.00. Not worth most crooks time.

As for me, I rarely even lock up the helmet. You don't live in NYC anymore.

Same here. My helmet is on the back rest and I've even left my leather jacket draped over the seat along with my gloves. No one seems to bother with items left on a motorcycle down here. Maybe because they figure most of us carry. lol
