so i stupidly drove off today (for about 2 feet) with the lock still on the back wheel - it snapped off two spokes and bent a third - i know i need to get these fixed but how many need to go before you get into any real danger - i had no choice but to drive it to work and it seemed fine

thanks vii

i hope your not asking cause you dont want to have to fix it. in any case either get a new wheel or repair if you even can

Is it possible to replace spokes yourself? I dunno. Our local bike shop has a gadget for fixing the wheel to, with gauges so they can tell when it's running perfectly true, after replacing spokes. Like geezer said - get it done TODAY, not tomorrow. A bike needs to be 100% safe, not 99% or 98%.

but it should be safe enough to drive to the bike shop right? I also have some metal to metal glue that i could probably get the two ends of the broken spokes touching again but is that enough for the spokes to provide support?

No, not enough. The spokes are in tension not compression. If you don't have the knowledge and equipment to do this correctly, and I don't know anybody outside of a shop that has the right stuff, get it to the shop and let them do the work. Some shops will replace all the spokes, because they believe that mixing used and old spokes isn't a good idea, I don't know, but I have read a lot of guys only replacing the damaged spokes without any problems.

Most places you can not buy 1 or 2 spokes, they come in a set.

yeah i found a shop that will replace them for me in a couple of days - said it'll be between €40 and 60 - just hope it holds out till then
